のみよしになどにて幸町茶屋二｜階（かい）さしき
大黒町辺の濱ざしきへなどへ大船の屋先をつき
込（こミ）打｜崩（くづ）しか所何ケ所ともかぞへかたし其おそろしさ
言語（ごんご）にのべがたし然るに前夜より地震（ぢしん）にて家内に
忍（しの）ひがたく用心のために茶ふね上荷（うわに）屋形ふね
などに乗（の）り老人｜婦女（ふじよ）小児の類ひ多く川中
にて船にしのぎ居候処右津波に打うた
れ死亡（しばう）におよぶ人いくに人といふ事をしらず
まことにあわれなる事ともなり扨（さて）津浪の
しだいハ沖の方鳴とひとしく高汐（たかしほ）押来（をしきた）り
て強勢（ごうせい）天地も崩るゝ如くなり又津波の
引事もはやきもの成にやスハ津浪と申
より即刻（そくこく）に濱（はま）辺へ見とゞけに参り候所に
常水の少し多きなどにて安心致せしほどの
ことなり実（まこと）にけぶの珍事（ちんじ）別して哀（あわれ）なるハ
大家の家内止たるゝ人拾四五人も船にてしのぎ
現代語訳
美吉などで幸町茶屋の二階座敷、大黒町辺りの浜座敷などへ大船の屋根先を突き込み、打ち崩した箇所は何ヶ所とも数え切れない。その恐ろしさは言葉では表現しがたい。前夜より地震のため家内にいることが耐え難く、用心のために茶船、上荷屋形船などに乗り、老人・婦女・小児の類いが多く川中で船に避難していたところ、この津波に打たれて死亡に及んだ人は何人というかわからない。まことに哀れなことである。
さて津波の様子は、沖の方が鳴ると同時に高潮が押し寄せてきて、その勢いは天地も崩れるかのようであった。また津波の引くのも速いもので、「津波だ」と言うや否や即座に浜辺へ確認に参ったところ、普段の水位より少し多い程度で安心したほどのことであった。実に稀有な珍事である。

At places like Miyoshi, the second-floor parlors of Saiwai-machi teahouses, and the waterfront parlors around Daikoku-machi area, large ships thrust their prows into buildings, destroying countless locations - too many to count. The terror was beyond description.
Since the previous night, staying indoors had become unbearable due to the earthquakes, so as a precaution, many people - elderly, women, and children - had taken refuge on tea boats and cargo boats with cabin structures in the middle of the river. When the tsunami struck, an unknown number of people were swept away and died. It was truly tragic.
The tsunami's behavior was such that as the offshore area roared, high tide surged forward with such tremendous force it seemed heaven and earth would collapse. The tsunami's retreat was also swift - no sooner had someone cried "Tsunami!" than people immediately rushed to the waterfront to check, only to find the water level just slightly higher than usual, which was reassuring.
It was truly an unprecedented phenomenon. Particularly tragic was the case of a wealthy family where fourteen or fifteen people who had remained behind were taking refuge on a boat...
