居候処老人｜婦女（ふじよ）小児の類（たく）ひ壱人ものこらず
打くだかれ死亡（しぼう）におよび其死がいさへ尋兼して

有さま実以（まことニもつて）哀（あわれ）と申も中〻おろかなることとも也
｜我等（われら）見聞（けんもん）せし中にも老若（らうじやく）男女ニかぎらず死がゐ
何十人といふ事なく目もあてられぬことなり是ニ
よつて 御上様より御不便に思召下され奉

節ゟ尤｜甚（はなハだ）しく候得ども地震ばかりなれハ格別（かくべつ）

いた所、老人・婦女・小児の類い一人も残らず打ち砕かれて死亡に及び、その死骸さえ探し兼ねて、跡に残った人々が毎日川の中を探り尋ねる有様は、実にもって哀れと申すのも中々おろかなことである。
我等が見聞きした中にも、老若男女に限らず死骸が何十人ということなく、目もあてられぬことである。これによって、御上様より御不便に思し召し下され、お願い申し上げて死骸を下され、取り納めるよう仰せ付けられた趣を承り、則ち七日八日、右の死骸何十人となく千日小橋その他墓所へ送ることが度々であった。
さて地震も次第に静かになったけれども、市中の騒動は物騒がしく、また津波が押し来るなどと申し出し、老人・婦女・小児の類いが縁を求めて上町の方へ同家する人が幾万人という数を知らず、古今未曾有の大変である。当年六月の節より最も甚だしく候えども、地震ばかりなれば格別

Where they had taken refuge, the elderly, women, and children - not one person remained, all were crushed and died. Even their corpses could hardly be found, and those who survived searched daily in the river, probing for the bodies. This scene was truly beyond words of pity - indeed, calling it pitiful would be an understatement.
Among what we witnessed, regardless of age or gender, there were countless dozens of corpses - a sight too horrible to behold. Because of this, the authorities, moved by compassion, granted our petition and ordered that the bodies be retrieved and properly interred. Accordingly, on the seventh and eighth days, dozens of these corpses were repeatedly transported to Sennichi Small Bridge and other burial grounds.
Now, while the earthquakes gradually subsided, the commotion in the city remained disturbing. People spread rumors that another tsunami might come, and the elderly, women, and children sought refuge with relatives, with tens of thousands moving to the uptown area. This was an unprecedented disaster in all of history. Though it has been most severe since June of this year, if it had been earthquakes alone, it would have been quite different.
