## Pilgrimage Songs (continued)
**Ninth Temple: Nanen-dō, Nara**
The spring sunlight
shines upon the Nanen-dō—
the thin clouds above
Mount Mikasa begin to clear.
**Tenth Temple: Mimuroto-ji, Uji, Yamashiro Province**
Through the whole night,
gazing at the moon as I pass Mimuroto—
upon the shallows of the Uji River
rise the standing waves.
**Eleventh Temple: Kami-Daigo-ji, same province (Yamashiro)**
Not even those bound by adverse karma
are left unsaved in this sacred precinct—
the pilgrimage road
lies sheltered beneath the trees.
**Twelfth Temple: Iwama-dera, Ōmi Province**
Where, I wonder,
lies the headwater?—at Iwama-dera,
is that the sound of waves
breaking on the shore, or wind through the pines?
**Thirteenth Temple: Ishiyama-dera, Ōmi Province**
Though the heart that prays
for the life to come may feel light,
the Buddha's vow is weighty—
like the stones of Ishiyama.
**Fourteenth Temple: Mii-dera of Ōtsu, same province (Ōmi)**
Coming and going—
the moon between the waves at Mii-dera,
and with the ringing of the temple bell,
the lake greets the dawn.
**Fifteenth Temple: Ima-Kumano, Kyoto**
Since ancient times,
unknown even as it arose—Ima-Kumano:
the Buddha's vow
reveals itself ever anew.
**Sixteenth Temple: Kiyomizu-dera, same (Kyoto)**
The wind through the pines,
the falls of Otowa at Kiyomizu—
the heart that cups and drinks
must surely feel refreshed.
