When he accompanied [Hidemochi] to Echizen, he was stationed as a guard at Funabashi and granted a fief of 1,000 koku. However, after Hidemochi's death from illness, the family stipend was terminated and he became a masterless samurai. The following year, when Lord Hideyasu entered the province, he was summoned with 300 koku and stationed at Funabashi as before. On the 10th day of the 2nd month of Keichō 9 (1604), year of Kinoe-tatsu, Matahei Masazane was summoned, and Lord Hideyasu showed him special favor. Having heard privately of his conduct in Tanba, the lord wished to promote him, but since there were many retainers, promotion was delayed, and he was granted 20 ryō in gold. The following year, [the lord] visited his private residence, and again showed special favor, directly ordering that river fishing be permitted in the restricted areas of the Funabashi river system and up to the toll stations. Accordingly, in the 8th month of the same year, while remaining behind during the Osaka campaign, he sent salmon caught by river fishing to Osaka via messenger, and received a written response which he still possesses today.
