【八幡御約諾の事】
仰（かう）したてまつらさらむや。そのゝち東大（とうたい）寺（し）の
中門（ちうもん）を大師御一人すぎさせたまふに。人
一人門のほとりにたゝずみゐけり。その
けしきたゞ人とは見えず。光明（くはうみやう）かゝやきあ
りがたき御ふぜひなり。大師あやしく
おぼしめし。いかなる御かたにてまし〳〵け
るとのたまひければ

（前頁より続き）仰ぎ信じ申し上げないことがあろうか（いや、必ず信じ申し上げるであろう）。その後、東大寺の中門を大師がお一人で通り過ぎられると、一人の人物が門のほとりにたたずんでいた。その様子はただの人とは見えない。光明が輝き、ありがたいご風情である。大師は不思議にお思いになり、「いかなるお方でいらっしゃるのか」とお尋ねになったところ——

【The Matter of Hachiman's Solemn Vow】

(Continuing from previous page) —how could one fail to look up to him in reverence and faith? After that, as the Daishi was passing alone through the central gate of Tōdaiji Temple, he noticed a solitary figure lingering near the gate. This person's appearance was clearly no ordinary human being. A radiant light shone about them, and their bearing was of an awe-inspiring, sacred quality. The Daishi found this most mysterious, and asked, "What manner of august personage might you be?"—
