又ある時。閑院（かんいん）の左大臣 冬嗣（ふゆつぐ）。大師にあひた
てまつりて。我はこれ大織冠（たいしよくわん）より。六代の後胤（こういん）内（うち）
麿（まろ）の大臣の三男（なん）也。昔（むかし）人王（にんわう）三十九代天 智（ち）天皇（てんわう）
の御とき鎌足（かまたり）の内大臣藤原の姓（せい）をたまはりし
より。代々の帝（みかど）の御うしろみとなり侍りしに
弘仁（こうにん）のころにいたりて。藤（ふぢ）氏（うぢ）の人わつかに三四
人はかり也。家の繁昌（はんじやう）せん事いかゝあらんと申さ
せ給ひしかは。大師のたまひけるは。山階（やましな）寺（でら）の内
に。南円（なんえん）堂（だう）をたて給へ。しからは一 家（け）さかんなる

またある時、閑院の左大臣・冬嗣が大師にお会い申し上げて、「私はこれ大織冠より六代の後胤、内麿の大臣の三男である。昔、人王三十九代・天智天皇の御時、鎌足の内大臣が藤原の姓を賜りしより、代々の帝の御後ろ盾となり仕えてまいりましたが、弘仁のころになりまして、藤氏の人がわずかに三、四人ばかりとなりました。家が繁昌するためにはどのようにすればよいでしょうか」と申し上げられたところ、大師がおっしゃるには、「山階寺の内に南円堂を建てなさい。そうすれば一家は盛んになるであろう」とおっしゃられたので、

【On the Matter of the Nan'en-dō】
On another occasion, the Minister of the Left of Kan'in, Fuyutsugu, came before the Great Master and said: "I am the sixth-generation descendant of the Taishokukan, and the third son of Minister Uchimaro. Long ago, from the time when the Inner Minister Kamatari was granted the surname Fujiwara during the reign of the thirty-ninth sovereign, Emperor Tenji, our family has served as the pillar of support for successive emperors. Yet by the Kōnin era, the people of the Fujiwara clan had dwindled to merely three or four persons. What might be done for our house to prosper?" To this, the Great Master replied: "Build the Nan'en-dō within Yamashina-dera. If you do so, your house shall surely flourish." And so, having received these words—
