それより和泉の国・大鳥の郡においでになると、道のかたわらに一人の老いた女性がいて、死んだ骸（むくろ）を抱きながらよよと泣き崩れていた。大師は不思議に思い、その訳をお尋ねになると、老女は答えて言うには、「私はこの里に長年住む寡婦（やもめ）でございます。この頃、この辺りに狼が多く出没して、多くの人々を苦しめておりましたが、私のたった一人の息子が、たった今、狼のために害を受けてしまいました。あまりにも悲しいゆえに嘆き、空の骸を抱きて、天を仰ぎ地に伏してひたすら悲しみ続けております」と。大師はお気の毒に思われ、すぐにその死んだ子のために蘇生の呪（じゅ）を誦（となえ）なさると、その男の子はたちまち――

From there, the Great Master traveled to Ōtori District in Izumi Province, where by the roadside he came upon an elderly woman who was clutching the lifeless body of someone and weeping bitterly in deep lamentation. The Great Master, finding this strange, inquired as to the reason, and the old woman replied: "I am a widow who has lived in this village for many long years. Of late, wolves have been appearing frequently in this area, causing suffering to many people, and just now my one and only son has been killed by one of the wolves. I am overcome with such unbearable grief that I hold his empty corpse in my arms, gazing up at the heavens and prostrating myself upon the earth in my sorrow."
