【牛の吼を聞知給ふ事】
又住吉のうらを御とをりありしにひとつの
犢（こうじ）大師を見たてまつりて吠（ほへ）けり。大師犢
にむかひて。なんぢかこゝろにまかすべし
とおほせられけるを。御 弟子（でし）あやしみて
いかなる事にて。さのたまふぞととひた
まへば。ふかき債（おひもの）を弁（べん）すへしや。いなやとな
くぞと。のたまひけるとなり。かゝるちくるい
のほゆるをたに。聞しりたまふ事ありかたか
りし権者（ごんじや）也

【牛の吼えるを聞き知り給う事】

また、住吉の浦をお通りになったとき、一頭の子牛が大師を見申し上げて吠えた。大師は子牛に向かって、「汝の心にまかせるがよい」とおっしゃった。御弟子がこれを不思議に思い、「いかなる事でそのようにおっしゃるのですか」とお尋ねになると、「深い借り（負い物）を弁済すべきか、否かと鳴いているのだ」とおっしゃったということである。このような畜類の吠えることをさえ、聞き知りなさるとは、まことにありがたい権者（化身・聖者）であることよ。

【On the Great Master's Understanding of a Calf's Lowing】

On another occasion, while the Great Master was passing through the shore of Sumiyoshi, a young calf caught sight of him and began to cry out. The Great Master turned to the calf and said, "Do as your heart dictates." His disciple found this puzzling and asked, "For what reason do you say such a thing?" The Great Master replied, "It is crying out asking whether it should repay a deep debt it owes, or whether it need not." That he could even understand the meaning of the cries of such a beast — truly, he was a wondrous *gonja* (an incarnation of a Buddha or bodhisattva), worthy of the deepest reverence.
