【水神福をもとむる事】
それより。あふみの湖水（こすい）のほとりへ立出させ
給へは。まん〳〵たるみづうみ。にはかにしらなみ
たかく鳴（なり）うごくしはらく御らんしける処に。
水上にさもうつくしき上らう一人たちゐたり。な
にものなるとのたまへば。われは是水神なり。和尚（くわしやう）
に福（ふく）をもとめて。二（に）世（せ）安楽（あんらく）をえんために。是迄
あらはれ出たると申せば。御くつをあたへさせ
給ひて。かれをすくひたまへは。水神（すいじん）履（くつ）をいたゞ
きて。水底（すいてい）に入ける

【水神が福を求めること】
それより、近江の湖水のほとりへ立ち出でなさったところ、満々と水をたたえた湖が、にわかに白波を高く立てて鳴り動いた。しばらくご覧になっていると、水面に、いかにも美しい上臈（じょうろう）が一人、立っていた。「何者であるか」とおっしゃると、「私はこの水神でございます。和尚様に福をお求めして、二世（現世と来世）の安楽を得るために、ここに現れ出たのでございます」と申し上げた。そこで（弘法大師は）御靴をお与えになり、彼女をお救いになったところ、水神は履物を頂戴して、水底へと入っていった。

【The Water Deity Seeks Blessings】
From there, he set out to the shores of Lake Ōmi (Lake Biwa), where the vast, brimming lake suddenly rose up with great white-crested waves, roaring and surging. As he watched for a while, there upon the surface of the water stood a single, remarkably beautiful court lady. When he asked, "What manner of being are you?" she replied, "I am the water deity of this lake. I have appeared before you, Reverend Master, to seek your blessings, so that I might attain peace and comfort in both this life and the next." Thereupon, he presented her with his sandals and thus saved her; the water deity, reverently receiving the footwear upon her head, descended into the depths of the lake.
