【僧油をかふ事】
なを近江（あふみ）路（ぢ）をとをらせ給ふに。ある山寺に
ゆきくれさせ給ひしが。たゞ一人の僧（そう）禅定（ぜんでう）
に座（ざ）してあり。たちより一夜のやとりをし給
ひ。よもすがらかたり給ふ。かの僧（そう）申けるは。此てら
里はなれたる山中なれば。あぶらをもとむる
ことをえず。仏前（ぶつぜん）にともしびをかゝげんとす
るに力なし。ねがはくは。和尚（くわしやう）の法力（ほふりき）をもつて
油（あぶら）をえさしめ給へと請（こい）ければ。空海（くうかい）すなはち
庵（いほ）りちかき巌石（がんぜき）にむかつて。しばらく御加
持（ぢ）まし〳〵けれは。たちまちあぶらわき出て
ながるゝ事 瀑布（たき）のしたゝるかことし。日夜に
たゆる事なく。そのいほりのつねのとも
しび。こゝろのまゝにかゝげけるとなり
しかれ共たま〳〵利欲（りよく）にふける者有て此油をくみ
他所へもてゆき侍れはもとの水にぞ成けるとかや
希（き）代の上のふしぎとぞ処の人は伝へたり
現代語訳
【僧が油を求めること】
さらに近江路をお通りになっていると、ある山寺で日が暮れてしまわれた。そこにはただ一人の僧が禅定（ぜんじょう）を組んで座っていた。（弘法大師は）立ち寄って一夜の宿をお取りになり、夜もすがら語り合われた。その僧が申すには、「この寺は里から離れた山中にあるため、油を手に入れることができません。仏前に灯火を掲げようとしても、その術がございません。どうか和尚様の法力をもって、油をお与えください」と請い願った。そこで空海はすぐに、庵の近くの巌石に向かって、しばらくの間ご加持（かじ）をなさったところ、たちまち油が湧き出て流れること、滝のしたたるがごとくであった。昼夜を問わず絶えることなく、その庵の常の灯火を、思いのままに掲げることができたということである。
しかしながら、たまたま利欲にふける者がいて、この油を汲み取り他所へ持ち去ったところ、もとの水になってしまったということである。希代（きだい）の上の不思議なことと、その土地の人々は伝えているのであった。

【A Monk Seeks Oil】
Continuing along the road through Ōmi, he found himself overtaken by nightfall at a mountain temple. There sat a single monk, deep in seated meditation (zazen). Kūkai stopped and took lodging for the night, and the two conversed throughout the long night hours. The monk explained: "This temple is situated deep in the mountains, far from any village, and so we are unable to obtain oil. We have no means by which to keep a lamp burning before the Buddha." He then made his request: "I humbly beseech you, Reverend Master, to use your miraculous powers to provide us with oil." Kūkai thereupon turned toward a great rock near the hermitage and performed a ritual empowerment (kaji) for a time, whereupon oil suddenly welled up and flowed forth like water cascading from a waterfall. It ceased neither day nor night, and the hermitage was thus able to keep its lamp burning before the Buddha at will, whenever it was needed.
However, it is said that on occasion there were those who, overcome by greed, drew the oil and carried it away to other places, whereupon it reverted to plain water. The local people have passed down this tale as a marvel beyond all marvels.
