【霊山寺御結界の事】
さて奥州（あうしう）にいたり給ふに。しのぶのこほりと
いふ処に。霊山（れうせん）寺（じ）といふ山寺あり。本願（ほんぐはん）誰（たれ）人
ともしらず。すみあらしたる寺なりし。此山には
ぐひんおほきゆへ。つねにかの寺のほとり物す
さましければ。いかはかりたつとき行者（ぎやうじや）もすまゐ
する事 難（かた）くたゞいたづらに年を経（へ）ければ。あれ
はてたり。あさゆふおとするものとては。あくま
の狂（きやう）するこゑのみにて。鳥けだものもかよは
ぬ魔界（ましかい）にてそありける。しかりといへども
空海かの寺にのほりたまへは。所のたみ百

さて奥州にお入りになると、信夫（しのぶ）の郡（こおり）というところに、霊山寺（りょうぜんじ）という山寺があった。誰が建立したのかもわからず、すっかり荒れ果てた寺であった。この山には天狗（てんぐ）が多いため、常にその寺のあたりは物凄まじい雰囲気であり、どれほど尊い行者であっても住みつくことが難しく、ただいたずらに年月を重ねるばかりで、すっかり荒廃してしまっていた。朝夕に音を立てるものといえば、悪魔が狂い騒ぐ声ばかりであって、鳥や獣さえも近づかない魔界と化していたのである。それでも空海がその寺に登られると、その土地の民や百姓たちは大いに喜び、どうか悪魔を払って（以下、次のページへ続く）

【The Establishing of a Sacred Boundary at Ryōzenji Temple】
Upon arriving in Ōshū (the northern provinces), Kūkai came to a place known as Shinobu no Kōri (Shinobu District), where there stood a mountain temple called Ryōzenji. It was unknown who had originally founded it, and it had fallen into complete desolation. Because the mountain was home to many tengu (mountain goblins), the area surrounding the temple was perpetually filled with a terrifying and eerie atmosphere. No matter how venerable a practitioner might be, it was exceedingly difficult to take up residence there, and the years had passed in vain as the temple fell utterly to ruin. The only sounds heard morning and evening were the wild, frenzied cries of demons, and the place had become a realm of evil spirits where not even birds or beasts would venture near.
