たびてんや此寺の大 魔縁（まえん）此ほとりの国〳〵
に出て悪事（あくじ）災難（さいなん）をなすこといかんともしかた
しと。空海になげき申ければすなはち空海
彼寺に入給ひて。まづもろ〳〵の悪魔（あくま）をう
しろの山にかりこめ封（ふう）し給へは。ぐひん共此 法力（ほうりき）に降（かう）
せられてこゝの木のえだ。かしこの岩はざまにひれふ
して。はねなき鳥のことくなれば。界内（かいない）あへて侵陵
のおそれなく。民（たみ）百姓（しやう）よろこびいさみかんじあへり

（前のページより続く）…どうか悪魔を払ってくださいませ、この寺の大魔縁がこの周辺の国々に出て、悪事や災難をなすことがどうにも防ぎようがないのです、と空海に嘆き申し上げると、空海はすぐにその寺に入られて、まずもろもろの悪魔を裏の山に追い込み、封じ込められた。すると天狗どもはこの法力に降伏させられて、あちらの木の枝、こちらの岩の狭間にひれ伏し、羽のない鳥のようになってしまったので、結界の内には一切、侵し荒らされる恐れがなくなり、民や百姓たちは喜び勇み、感じ入るのであった。

The great demonic forces of this temple venture out into the surrounding provinces, causing harm and calamity, and there is nothing we can do to prevent it." Upon hearing these lamentations, Kūkai immediately entered the temple and first drove all the various demons into the mountain behind it, sealing them away. The tengu, overcome by this spiritual power, prostrated themselves upon the branches of trees here and among the crags of rocks there, rendered as helpless as birds without wings. Thereafter, there was no longer any fear of intrusion or ravaging within the sacred boundary, and the common people and villagers rejoiced, took heart, and were filled with profound admiration.
