【真如親王の事】
空海（くうかい）上洛（らく）まし〳〵けると聞えしかは。高岳（たかをか）親王（しんわう）
御 受法（じゆほう）の為に。空海の坊（ばう）にまふで給ひけるに。
折ふし御堂（みだう）に行法（きやうほう）まし〳〵けれは。親王しば
らく御堂（みだう）の辺（ほとり）にたゝすみおはしけるが。ひそかに
空海（くうかい）の壇場（だんちやう）をのぞき見給へは。薩埵（さつた）の儀（ぎ）形（げう）
厳然（げんぜん）として光明（くはうみやう）赫奕（かくやく）たり。親王大きにおど
ろき。礼拝（らいはい）恭敬（くげう）して。いと有かたくおほしめし。扨
御 行法（ぎやうぼう）おはりしかは。御 受法（じゆほう）まし〳〵て。ながく。弟子
となり給ふ。空海（くうかい）達磨（たらま）をしれるとよみ給ひ
し歌も。此 親王（しんわう）につかはされし歌なりと
ぞ申ける。

空海が上洛されたと聞いたので、高岳親王は受法のために空海の坊を訪ねられた。ちょうどその折、空海は御堂で行法をされていたので、親王はしばらく御堂のほとりに立ち止まっておられたが、ひそかに空海の壇場を覗き見られると、薩埵の姿が厳然として、光明が赫々と輝いていた。親王は大いに驚き、礼拝し恭しく敬って、たいへん有り難くお思いになられた。さて、行法が終わってから、受法をされて、長く弟子となられた。空海が「達磨を知れる」と詠まれた歌も、この親王に遣わされた歌であると申し伝えられている。

[On the Matter of Prince Shinnyo]
Upon hearing that Kūkai had come up to the capital, Prince Takaoka visited Kūkai's temple lodgings in order to receive the Dharma teachings. As it happened, Kūkai was at that moment performing his ritual practices in the hall, so the Prince waited for a while near the hall. Peering quietly into Kūkai's ritual altar space, the Prince beheld the solemn form of a bodhisattva (sattva), with a brilliant, radiant light blazing magnificently. The Prince was greatly astonished, and prostrating himself in reverence and deep respect, he felt profoundly moved by what he had witnessed. When the ritual practices had concluded, the Prince received the Dharma transmission and became Kūkai's disciple for life. It is said that the poem composed by Kūkai containing the phrase "one who knows the Dharma (Daruma)" was indeed the poem sent to this very Prince.
