空海が御在世の間、一念の観解を凝らし、一座の三昧を修められた時、その相（すがた）が現れたのである。ある時は水輪観に入られると、その室内がことごとく緑の沢へと変じて、水が満々と湛えられた。また、鑁字観を凝らされる時には、堂上がことごとく火炎が燃え上がって、炎がゆらゆらと立ちのぼった。六大無㝵の自性、万法輪円の具徳、本有の理が、宛然として満ち満ちているのを見ることができた。奇瑞はあげて記しがたいほどであった。

During Kūkai's lifetime, whenever he concentrated his mind in contemplative insight (kanke) and practiced samādhi in a single sitting, various manifestations would appear. On occasions when he entered the Water-Wheel Meditation (suirin-kan), the entire interior of his room would transform into a green marsh, filled to the brim with water. And when he concentrated on the Syllable "Vaṃ" Meditation (ranji-kan), the entire hall would burst into blazing flames, with fire flickering and surging upward. The self-nature of the Six Great Elements without obstruction, the inherent virtues of the perfect circle of all dharmas, and the principle of original endowment — all these were manifestly and abundantly present for all to behold. The auspicious wonders were so numerous as to be impossible to record in full.
