御 弟子（でし）あまたまし〳〵ける中に。二人すぐれた
まひしあり。操行（さうかう）智徳（ちとく）世のしらざる所。人のはか
らざる事也。一人は智慧（ちゑ）難思（なんじ）にして。万人にすぐれ
たり。空海（くうかい）のたまひけるは。我（わが）秘蔵（ひざう）は彼三 衣（ゑの）箱（はこ）
の底（そこ）にあり。深旨（じんし）尋（たつ）ぬべし。一人は土州（どしう）金剛頂（こんかうちやう）寺（し）
の樹下（じゆげ）石上（せきしやう）に座して。生涯（しやうかい）を送り給ふ。時あらひ
風たゝけ共。定心（ちやうしん）石床（せきしやう）はたらくことなく。鳥 巣（す）を
くひ獣（けたもの）なれて。禅（ぜん）渓（けい）洞（とう）窓（そう）ながくしづか也しるべし。定（でう）
恵（ゑ）の二徳。此両 聖（しやう）に現（げん）ぜしことを。扨空海御 生（しやう）所（じよ）な

御弟子が数多くいらっしゃった中に、二人の特に優れた方がいた。その操行（品行）と智徳は、世間の人々の知らないところ、人の推し量ることのできないものであった。一人は、智慧が思いも及ばないほどで、万人に優れていた。空海はおっしゃった。「我が秘蔵（の教え）は、あの三衣の箱の底にある。深い旨を尋ね求めなさい」と。もう一人は、土佐国の金剛頂寺の樹の下、石の上に座して、生涯を送られた。時に嵐が来て風が吹き荒れても、禅定の心はその石の床から動くことなく、鳥が（頭に）巣を作り、獣もなついて、禅の境地・洞窟の窓は長く静かであった。定（じょう）と慧（え）の二つの徳が、この両聖人に現れたことを知るべきである。さて、空海の御生所（お生まれになった所）であることから、讃岐国へ御下向なさった。屏風の浦と申すところは、四方の山の形が、屏風を立てたように険し（く……）

[Concerning the Two Eminent Disciples]
Among the many disciples Kūkai had, there were two who were particularly outstanding. Their conduct and wisdom were such that the world could not fathom them, and no person could measure their depth. One possessed wisdom beyond comprehension, surpassing all people. Kūkai said to him: "My secret treasury [of teachings] lies at the bottom of that box of the three robes. Seek out its profound meaning." The other spent his entire life seated beneath a tree and upon a stone at Kongōchō-ji Temple in Tosa Province. Even when storms came and the wind raged, his mind of meditation did not stir from its stone seat; birds built nests upon him, and wild animals became tame around him — the Chan stream and the cave window remained long and tranquil. One should know that the two virtues of samādhi (concentration) and prajñā (wisdom) were manifested in these two holy men. Now, since Tosa was Kūkai's birthplace, he made a journey down to Sanuki Province.
