【釈迦出現の事】
しき山なるゆへにより。なづけしとかや。空海
御生国（しょうごく）のことなれは。しかるべき伽藍（がらん）を建立（こんりう）し。国
民（みん）をも。化（け）すべくとおぼしめし。しばらく彼
山におこなひたまひて。境地（けうち）を御覧じける
処に。ある夜。孤峯（こほう）のうへに片雲（へんうん）おほふ
とおほしめしければ。いきやうよもに薫（くん）じて。
紫雲（しうん）のうちに釈迦（しやか）如来（によらい）御かたちをあらはし。
御 影向（ようがう）まし〳〵けり。しんかん肝（きも）にめいじ有かた
く思召。すなはち其影の御すがたを絵（ゑ）にうつし。
とゞめたまひて。万人におかまさしめ給ふ。今の
世まてもつたはりてありとなん

しい山であることからそのように名付けられたとのこと。空海の御生国のことであるから、ふさわしい伽藍を建立して、国の民をも教化すべきとお思いになり、しばらくあの山で修行なさって、境内の地をご覧になっていたところ、ある夜、孤峰（ひとつ高くそびえる峰）の上に片雲（ひとひらの雲）がたなびくとお思いになったところ、よい香りが四方に薫じて、紫雲の中に釈迦如来のお姿が現れ、御影向（ごようごう）なさった。深く肝に銘じ、ありがたいとお思いになり、すぐにその御影のお姿を絵に写し留めなさって、万人に拝ませなさった。今の世まで伝わっているとのことである。

[The Appearance of Śākyamuni]
...it was called such because of its rugged mountains. Since this was Kūkai's home province, he thought it fitting to construct a temple complex there and to bring spiritual guidance to the people of the land. He practiced austerities on that mountain for a time and was surveying the grounds, when one night, he perceived that a single cloud was drifting over the summit of a solitary peak. A wonderful fragrance began to waft in all four directions, and within a purple cloud, the form of Śākyamuni Tathāgata manifested itself — a sacred apparition had descended. Deeply moved to the core of his being and filled with reverence, Kūkai immediately had that divine image transferred to a painting and preserved it, allowing all people to worship before it. It is said that this image has been handed down even to the present day.
