空海御よろこびなゝめならず。彼あまくたりし五つ
の剱（けん）を巌穴（がんけつ）にうづみ。すなはち中央（ちうわう）の嶺（みね）をてんじ
蔵王の権扉（こんひ）を開き。自（みつから）千手（せんじゆ）観音（くはんをん）の霊像（れいさう）を作り。
本尊（ほんぞん）に安置（あんぢ）し。終に精舎（しやうじや）を建立（こんりう）し。蓮宇（れんう）基（もとい）をつ
らね。松坊（せうばう）軒（のき）を並（ならべ）たり。抑此 境（けう）致（ち）と申すは三 朶（た）の
嶺（みね）そばたち。半（はん）天の雲 腰（こし）をめくり。四 望（ばう）山はれ
て。八 ケ国（かこく）の境（さかひ）まなこの前にあざやか也。さるに
よりて此寺を八国寺と号（かう）し。山号（がう）を剱山（けんさん）とな

現代語訳
空海は御喜びもひとしおであった。空から降ってきた五つの剣を岩穴に埋め、すなわち中央の嶺を選んで蔵王の権殿（ごんでん）の扉を開き、自ら千手観音の霊像を刻んで本尊として安置し、ついに精舎（寺院）を建立された。蓮の花のように堂宇が基礎を連ね、松林の中に僧坊の軒を並べた。そもそもこの境致（景勝地）と申すのは、三つの峰が高くそびえ立ち、雲が中天に山の腰を巡り、四方の山々は晴れ渡って、八か国の境が目の前にくっきりと見渡せる。それゆえ、この寺を「八国寺」と号し、山号を「剣山（けんざん）」と名付けられたのは、空から剣が降ってきたことによるものである。詳しいことは、かの寺の縁起に明らかにされているとのことである。

Kūkai's joy was immeasurable. He buried the five swords that had descended from the sky in a rock cave, then chose the central peak, opened the doors of Zaō's sanctuary, and personally carved a sacred image of the Thousand-Armed Kannon (Avalokiteśvara), which he enshrined as the principal object of worship. He thereafter founded a temple: halls rose in rows like lotus blossoms, and the monks' quarters lined their eaves amid the pines. The scenic character of this place is truly remarkable — three peaks rise sharply into the sky, clouds encircle their midpoints, the mountains in all four directions lie open and clear, and the borders of eight provinces are distinctly visible to the eye. For this reason, the temple was named "Hachikoku-ji" (Temple of the Eight Provinces), and the mountain was given the name "Kenzan" (Sword Mountain) — so called because the swords had descended from the heavens. The full details, it is said, are set forth in the founding legend (engi) of that temple.
