そのゝち。かのかり人のをしへのことく。紀伊国に
おもむき給ひ。紀（き）の川のほとりに着（つき）給ふ。いまの
政所（まんどころ）の慈尊（じそん）院（ゐん）これなり。さて山野（さんや）を見めぐり
給ふ処に。かのやまとの国にて。かりうどの引
つれし。黒白（こくひやく）のいぬいづくともなくいで来り
て。空海（くうかい）をみてなつきたてまつりけり。いよ
〳〵たのもしくおほしめし。かの犬をあひぐ
してやま〳〵にのぼりたまへば。ほどなく平原（へいけん）
のひろき沢（さは）のほとりにいたり給ふ。その地のかゝ
りを御覧するに。東西（とうざい）は竜（りやう）の臥（ふせ）るかたちな
る。山つらなりて。東流（とうりう）の水あり。南北（なんぼく）は虎（とら）のうづ

その後、あの狩人の教えの通りに、紀伊国へと向かわれ、紀の川のほとりにお着きになった。今の政所の慈尊院がこれである。さて山野を見て回られていると、あの大和国にて狩人が連れていた黒白の犬が、どこからともなく現れ出て、空海を見て懐き申し上げた。（空海は）いよいよ頼もしくお思いになり、あの犬を伴って山々を登られると、ほどなく広い平原の沢のほとりにお着きになった。その土地の様子をご覧になると、東西は龍が伏せているような形で山が連なり、東へと流れる水がある。南北は虎が渦を巻く（ように山が連なり）——

Thereafter, following the instructions of that hunter, Kūkai made his way to Kii Province and arrived at the bank of the Ki River. This is the site of what is now the Jisonin of the Administrative Office (Mandokoro). As he traveled about surveying the mountains and fields, the black-and-white dogs that the hunter had led in the land of Yamato appeared from nowhere and, upon seeing Kūkai, came to him with familiarity and affection. Feeling all the more encouraged and heartened, he took the dogs along as his companions and climbed up into the mountains. Before long, he arrived at the edge of a wide marsh on a broad plain. Surveying the character of the land, he saw that to the east and west, the mountains ranged in the shape of a reclining dragon, with waters flowing eastward; and to the north and south, the mountains coiled like a crouching tiger——
