【On the Construction of the Great Pagoda】
Now, upon returning to Mount Kōya, the Great Master resolved to model the Iron Tower of South India and erect a single pagoda (tōba) in its image. He called upon the faithful (chishiki — those who would offer donations) from the ten directions, and invited the four assemblies (monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen) to participate in the offering of merit. At last, the construction works commenced: the building was given a magnificent and ornate structure, its sacred images adorned and polished in lustrous purple gold (shikon), and a single Tahō Pagoda was erected. It stood sixteen jō in height. The eaves of its first story were wreathed within the clouds, and the nine-ringed finial (kurin) shone brilliantly above the clouds themselves. Within were enshrined four Buddhas standing one jō and four shaku tall, and four Bodhisattvas standing eight shaku and five sun tall.
