すゝめまいらせ法楽（ほうらく）のためとて。法花（ほけ）経（きやう）
を講読（かうどく）してきかしめ給ふ

弘仁十四年に、東寺を勅命によって賜られましたので、約束を違えることなく、かの人物が東寺に参り来て、「日頃、あちこちにて御約束を申し上げておりました二階の柴守長者が参上いたしました」と申されました。空海はこの上なく喜ばれて、さまざまにもてなし、御饗応があって、赤飯を差し上げ、法楽のためにと法華経を講読してお聞かせになりました。

(Continued from the previous page) "...you must surely come and protect [my dharma]." With these heartfelt words they made their pledge, and once again the old man disappeared, his destination unknown.
In the fourteenth year of Kōnin, when Kūkai was granted Tōji Temple by imperial decree, true to his promise, that very personage came to Tōji and announced, "The Elder Shibamori of Nikai, who made his pledge to you in various places over these past days, has now come to call." Kūkai was overjoyed beyond measure, and received his guest with great hospitality and a grand feast. He offered red rice (sekihan) and, for the purpose of dharma-pleasure (hōraku), read aloud from the Lotus Sūtra for his guest to hear.
