ならはしめ給へと。父母（ちゝはゝ）にいさめられければことは
りとは思はれけれ共。かた時も離（はな）れまいらせしと
思ひ給ふとなれは。はる〳〵と都（みやこ）へ上せ奉らん事。
心もとなくて。一わ〳〵と延引（えんいん）になりしかば。大足（おほたり）し
ゐて勤学（きんがく）のことをすゝめ申されけれは。空海（くうかい）御
悦（よろこ）びかぎりなく。父母をさま〳〵に申なくさめ。
御いとまを乞給へば。なこりはいつか山川の滝（たき）つなみだ
をせきとゞめ。これも我子のためそととて志学（しいかく）の
年と申にぞ。伯父（をぢ）大足にあづけまいらせ。みや
こにのぼさせ給ひけり

習わせてくださいと、父母に勧められたので、それはもっともなことだと思われたけれども、「片時も離れたくない」と思っていらっしゃったので、遥々と都へ上らせ申し上げることが心もとなくて、何かと延期になってしまった。大足が強く学問のことを勧め申されたので、空海は御喜びこの上なく、父母を様々に説得なさって、お暇を願われると、名残惜しさはいつか山川の滝のように涙が流れて止まらない。「これも我が子のためなのだ」ということで、志学の年と申す時に、伯父大足にお預け申し上げ、都にお上りになったのであった。

When his parents advised him to pursue such studies, though he thought this was reasonable, since he wished "not to be separated even for a moment," sending him all the way to the capital seemed uncertain, and so it was postponed for various reasons. When Ōtari strongly recommended academic pursuits, Kūkai was overjoyed and persuaded his parents in various ways, requesting permission to depart. The sorrow of parting was such that tears flowed like a mountain stream's waterfall without cease. Saying "This too is for our child's sake," at the age called shigaku (the age of aspiring to learning), they entrusted him to his uncle Ōtari and sent him up to the capital.
