現代語訳
（水がひどく凍っていて）耐えられるようなものでもなかったので、しばらくということで（そのまま）置かれていたのを、守敏が御手水に向かい、火の印を結ばれたところ、氷はたちまちに溶けて、まるで沸き返る湯のようになった。帝をはじめ奉り、諸卿皆々、不思議な思いをなしたのであった。

——the water was so severely frozen as to be quite unbearable, and so it had been set aside for a while. Shūbin then turned toward the basin of ablution water and formed the mudra of fire, whereupon the ice instantly melted and the water became like boiling, bubbling hot water. The Emperor and all the assembled nobles without exception were filled with a sense of wonder.
