ひて。これはあまりにあつくて。手にもとら
れずと仰られければ、しゆびんさきにもこ
りずして。又けんざんにむかつて。水の印（いん）を
むすび給へとも。湯（ゆ）あへてさめず。なをわき
かへりけり。しゆびん前後のふかくに色をう
しなひ。これたゞことには侍らず。いかさまに
わざをなすものやあらんとて忙然（ぼうぜん）として
あきれゐたまふところに。空海（くうかい）そばなる
しやうじをあけて。いかにしゆびん空海これ
に有とはしり給はずや。つねに我をあざ
むき給ふらんなれど。星光（せいくはう）は朝日（てうじつ）に消（きへ）。蛍火（けいくは）は
暁月（けうげつ）に隠（かくる）ること。これまことをあらはす本文也。
しるをばしるとせよ。しらざるをばしらずとせ
よ。これしれるなりと。いはずやとのたまひ
けれは。しゆびんことばなくておはしけるが。大き
にはぢたまひて鬱（うつ）陶（とう）を心の中にさしは
さみ嗔恚（しんい）を気（き）上（じやう）にかくして。座をたちやふ
りていかりをなして。退出（たいしゆつ）せられける。
現代語訳
「これはあまりに熱くて、手にも取れない」と仰せになったので、守敏は先の失敗にもめげず、また建盞に向かって水の印を結ばれたが、湯はいっこうに冷めず、なおも沸き返っていた。守敏は前後の失態に顔色を失い、「これはただごとではない。いったい何者かが細工をしているのではないか」と、茫然としてあきれ果てていたところに、空海が傍らの障子を開けて、「いかに守敏よ、空海がここにいると知っておられぬのか。常々わたしを欺こうとなさっているようだが、『星の光は朝日の前に消え、蛍の火は夜明けの月の前に隠れる』、これこそ真実を示す根本の言葉である。『知ることは知るとせよ、知らざることは知らずとせよ、これが知るということである』とはおっしゃらないのか」と仰せになったので、守敏は言葉もなくいたが、大いに恥じ入り、鬱々とした気持ちを心の中に抱え、怒りの気を上に押し隠して、座を立ち去り、怒りをあらわにして退出されたのであった。

"This is far too hot—I cannot even take it in my hands," the Emperor declared. Shūbin, undeterred by his earlier failure, once again faced the bowl and formed the water mudra, yet the hot water would not cool in the slightest and continued to boil furiously. Having failed in both attempts, Shūbin lost all color from his face and muttered, "This is no ordinary matter—surely someone must be working some trick here," and sat there utterly dumbfounded. At that moment, Kūkai slid open a nearby shoji screen and called out: "How now, Shūbin—did you not know that Kūkai is right here? You have long sought to deceive me, it seems, yet 'the light of the stars vanishes before the morning sun, and the glow of the firefly hides before the moon at dawn'—these words reveal the truth of things. Is it not said, 'What you know, hold as knowing; what you do not know, hold as not knowing—this is true knowledge'?" At this, Shūbin was left utterly speechless. Burning with deep shame, he harbored a brooding resentment within his heart and concealed his rising fury, then stormed up from his seat in anger and withdrew from the imperial presence.
