蛍雪（けいせつ）のまとに。御まなこをさらし。読書（とくしよ）のお
しまづきには。御ひぢをはなし給はず。つとめつとめ
はげみ給へは。つねの人の二三十 年（ねん）の学業（がくげう）を。
わつかに四五年のうちにきはめ給ひて。御
まなびの花実（くはじつ）時を待（また）すしてひらき。千（せん）
載（さい）の春秋は。心のうちにきはめ。一部の錦（きん）
繍（しう）は筆のさきにあざやかなり。いまははや御
心にかゝる雲（くも）もなく。風月（ふうげつ）の才（さい）もくもりなか

【開典の御勤学 并 御出家の事】
蛍雪の学びに目を晒し、読書の机からは肘を離されることがなかった。努め励まれたので、普通の人の二三十年の学業を、わずか四五年のうちに極められて、御学問の花と実は時を待たずして開き、千年の春秋は心の内に極め、一部の錦繍は筆の先に鮮やかであった。今ははや御心にかかる雲もなく、風月の才も曇りがなかったということである。

[The Study of Classical Texts and the Matter of Taking Religious Vows]
He devoted himself to study like those who read by the light of fireflies and reflected snow, never lifting his elbow from the reading desk. Through his diligent efforts, he mastered in merely four or five years what would take ordinary people twenty or thirty years of study. The flower and fruit of his learning bloomed without waiting for the proper season, he comprehended a thousand years of history within his heart, and his brilliant literary works flowed vividly from his brush tip. Now there were no longer any clouds troubling his mind, and his talents in literature and poetry were without blemish.
