まことにおもんじあはめ給ふことあらたにして。えい
かんゆるきにあらず。四代のみかと両 帝（てい）の后妃（こうひ）み

まことに（空海を）尊び崇められることは新たにして、その栄誉は衰えることがない。四代の帝と両帝の后妃たちは、皆、灌頂の壇に臨まれて、空海を師と仰がれなかったことはない。総じて大師御帰朝よりこのかた、御願を勤められたこと、五十余度に及ぶ。その他にも、あるいは結縁の灌頂、また加持香水、あるいは仁寿殿における十八日の観音供、また真言院での毎日の御念誦など、さまざまな御願を定め置かれたことは、今に至るまで怠ることなく続けられている。これはみな、国を守り、家を整え、おのれを修め、人を安んじる妙なる術（すべ）であり、ただ真言の教えに帰するものである。

Truly, the reverence and admiration shown (to Kūkai) was ever renewed, and his glory knew no decline. Four successive emperors and the consorts of two emperors all attended the initiation altar (kanjo no dan) without exception, looking up to Kūkai as their teacher. In total, from the time of the Great Master's return to Japan, the number of prayer ceremonies he performed reached more than fifty occasions. Beyond these, there were also initiation ceremonies for forming karmic bonds (kechien no kanjō), consecrated water rituals (kaji kōzui), the eighteen-day Kannon offering at the Jijūden, the daily recitations of prayers (nenzu) at the Shingon-in, and various other prayer ceremonies that were established and have continued without interruption to this day. All of these are wondrous arts for protecting the nation, ordering the household, disciplining oneself, and bringing peace to the people — all of which ultimately return to and find their source in the teachings of Shingon.
