【真如親王御影を書給ふ事】
と也。されは一人より万人にいたるまで。たれか空海
のおんどく。真言のみやうくんをかふむらざるべ
き。心をとゞめてとふべきをや。真如（しんによ）親王（しんわう）と申す
も平城（へいぜい）天 皇（わう）の皇子（わうじ）高岳（たかをか）の親王（しんわう）とて東宮（とうぐう）に
立せ給ひしかば。弘仁（こうにん）聖主（せいしゆ）の御 次（つぎ）に。一天のあるじ
とあふがれ。ましますべかりしが。世の中おもひの外
なる事共出来て。御ぐしおろさせたまひ。大師
の御 弟子（でし）となり給ひけり。真言（しんごん）の修学（しゆがく）など。いと
かしこくきこえさせ給ひし人なり。ある時此 親王（しんわう）
すゑの世の御かたみなりとおぼしめし。ひそかに
空海の御影（みえい）をうつさせたまひけるに。空海
にはかくともしらせまいらせず。障子（しやうし）をへだてゝ書（かき）た
まふに。大師はやこれをしろしめしてわがかたちを
うつし留（とめ）給ふが。まなこをばみづからいれ申すべし
とのたまへは。親王（しんわう）おどろき給へり。さて御影（みえい）の御
まなこは。空海みづからいれさせ給ふ。高野（かうや）山（さん）の御（み）
影堂（えいだう）に安置（あんち）せられしは。此 御影（みえい）也。その時 親王（しんわう）又
一ふくうつしをき給ひて。空海（くうかい）御 入定（にうでう）のゝち御身に
したがへて。入唐（につたう）し給へりとも申伝へ侍り
現代語訳
【真如親王が御影を書かれた事】
というものである。それゆえ、一人から万人に至るまで、誰が空海の御恩徳と、真言の妙なる教えを受けないでいられようか。心にとどめて問うべきことである。真如親王と申し上げる方は、平城天皇の皇子・高岳親王と申して、東宮（皇太子）に立てられていたので、弘仁の聖主（嵯峨天皇）の御次に、天下の主と仰がれるべきお方であった。しかし、世の中には思いもよらぬことが起こり、御剃髪なされて、大師の御弟子となられた。真言の修学などにおいて、誠にすぐれていると聞こえ給いし方である。ある時、この親王は、末の世への御形見にしようとお思いになり、ひそかに空海の御影（肖像画）を写させようとされた。空海にはそのことをお知らせせずに、障子を隔てて描かれていたところ、大師はすでにこれをご存知になって、「わが姿を写し留めていただいているが、眼はみずから入れて差し上げましょう」とおっしゃったので、親王は驚かれた。そして御影の御眼は、空海がみずから入れられた。高野山の御影堂に安置されているのは、この御影である。その時、親王はもう一幅を写し置かれて、空海が御入定の後、御身に従えて入唐されたとも伝え申しております。

[On the Matter of Prince Shinnyo Having the Portrait of Kūkai Painted]
And so it is. From one person to ten thousand, who could there be that would not receive the grace of Kūkai and be blessed by the wondrous teachings of Shingon? This is something one should hold in one's heart and reflect upon deeply. The one known as Prince Shinnyo was the imperial son of Emperor Heizei, Prince Takaoka, who had been installed as Crown Prince (Tōgū) and was accordingly to be revered as the lord of all under heaven after the sacred sovereign of the Kōnin era (Emperor Saga). However, unexpected events arose in the world, and he took the tonsure, becoming a disciple of the Great Master. He was a person of whom it was said that his study and practice of Shingon was truly remarkable. On one occasion, this Prince, wishing to leave behind a memento for future generations, secretly had a portrait (miei) of Kūkai painted. Without letting Kūkai know of this, the Prince was painting it from behind a shoji screen, when the Great Master, already aware of what was happening, declared: "You are copying and preserving my likeness — but the eyes I shall enter myself." The Prince was astonished. And so the eyes in the portrait were indeed entered by Kūkai himself. The portrait enshrined in the Mieidō (Portrait Hall) on Mount Kōya is this very portrait. It is also said and handed down that at that time the Prince made a second copy for himself, and after Kūkai's entry into eternal meditation (nyūjō), he took it with him when he traveled to Tang China.
