【延喜帝御衣を送り給ふ事】
されは代々のみかどいづれもしんがうありし。中にも人
皇（わう）六十代。延喜（えんぎ）の御門（みかど）の御時。檜皮色（ひわだいろ）の御ころも
を一 装（しう）空海五代の御 弟子（でし）観賢（くはんけん）僧正（そうじやう）をして。高野（かうや）
の御廟（ごべう）にをくらせ給ひける。僧正これを持参（ぢさん）して
奥院（をくのゐん）の廟窟（べうくつ）をひらき拝せられけるに。霧（きり）の道
だてたるがことくにして御すがたおがまれさせ給はず
されば僧正（そうじやう）かなしみのなみだをながし謝（しや）していはく。
われ生を五 欲（よく）のさかひにうくといへども。さらに犯過（ほんか）な
し。いかでか御 法体（ほつたい）を見たてまつらざらんと。ねんごろ
にさんげし給ひしかば。忽（たちまち）秋の月の霧（きり）をいづるがご
とく。御すがた厳然（げんぜん）としてあらはれ給へり。鬚髪（しゆはつ）ながく

【延喜帝が御衣をお送りになった事】
それゆえ、代々の天皇はいずれも真言（空海の教え）をご信仰なさっていた。中でも人皇六十代、延喜の御門（醍醐天皇）の御代に、檜皮色の御衣を一揃い、空海より五代目の御弟子である観賢僧正をして高野山の御廟にお送りになった。僧正はこれを持参して奥院の廟窟を開いて拝礼なさったところ、霧が立ちこめて道を遮るかのようで、御姿をお拝みすることができなかった。そこで僧正は悲しみの涙を流し、謝して申し上げるには、「私はこの五欲の境界に生を受けたとはいえ、何ら過ちを犯したことはございません。どうして御法体をお見上げすることができないのでしょうか」と、心を込めて懺悔なさったところ、たちまち秋の月が霧の中から現れ出るかのように、御姿が厳然として現れなさった。鬚と髪は長く……

【On Emperor Engi Sending His Imperial Robe】
Thus it was that emperors of successive generations all held faith in Shingon (Kūkai's teachings). Among them, in the reign of the sixtieth human emperor, Emperor Engi (Emperor Daigo), he had a robe of hinoki-bark color sent to the mausoleum at Kōya, through the offices of the Ecclesiastical Administrator Kangen, the fifth-generation disciple in succession from Kūkai. The Ecclesiastical Administrator brought the robe and opened the burial chamber at the inner sanctuary (Okunoin) to pay his respects, but it was as though a mist had risen up to block his way, and he was unable to behold the Great Master's form. The Administrator then shed tears of grief and offered an apology, saying: "Though I have received this life within the realm of the five desires, I have committed no transgressions whatsoever. How is it that I am not permitted to look upon your sacred form?" He offered this heartfelt confession and act of repentance, whereupon, like the autumn moon emerging from the mist, the Great Master's august form appeared before him in solemn majesty.
