又ある時。東寺（とうじ）定額（じやうかく）僧（そう）縁実（えんじつ）といふ人。讃州（さんしう）善（ぜん）
通（つう）寺（じ）の別当（べつたう）になりて。下向（げかう）の時。彼（かの）寺（てら）にして空（くう）
海（かい）の御筆を感得（かんとく）したまひけるに。その文（もん）に

されば。空海 草創（さうそう）の砌（みぎり）。棲庭（せいてい）経行（きやうぎやう）の所。一 度（ど）
も其 地（ち）にのぞむ人。芳縁（はうえん）のあさからざる事

【遺跡影向の事】
またある時、東寺の定額僧・縁実という人が、讃州（さぬきのくに）の善通寺の別当となって下向する際に、かの寺において空海の御筆（おんふで）を感得なさった。その文（もん）にはこのように書かれていた。
「高野の樹下に居することを卜（し）め、神を兜率の雲上に遊ばせ、日々の影向（ようごう）を欠かさず、所々の遺跡を検知す」云々。
されば、空海が草創なさった折より、その棲庭（すみか）・経行（きんひん）の地に一度でも訪れる人は、（大師との）芳縁（ほうえん）の浅からぬことを、深く思い知るべきである。

【The Matter of the Apparition at the Sacred Sites】
On another occasion, a man called Enjitsu, a *jōgaku* monk of Tō-ji temple, was appointed *bettō* (administrator) of Zentsū-ji temple in Sanshū (Sanuki Province), and upon his journey there he received, at that very temple, a piece of writing brushed by Kūkai himself. The text read as follows:
"Having chosen to dwell beneath the trees of Kōya, and having sent his spirit to roam above the clouds of Tuṣita Heaven, he fails not a single day to manifest his presence, and keeps watch over the sacred sites in every place." And so forth.
Therefore, since the very time of Kūkai's founding of this place — whether the dwelling grounds or the paths where he walked in meditation — any person who visits these sacred sites even once should come to understand, with deep conviction, that the karmic bond connecting them to the Great Master is by no means shallow.
