【平大相国大塔修造の事】
ある時。平（ の）大（だい）相国（しやうこく）芸州（げいしう）の宰吏（さいり）たりし時。高野（かうや）
山（さん）の大 塔（たう）を修造（しゆざう）せられんがために。高野に参（さん）
詣（けい）しねんごろに祈精（きせい）をこらし。日ならず御（み）修理（しゆり）を
とげられければ。丹誠（たんせい）冥慮（みやうりよ）に通（つう）じけるにや。
大師あらはれ出させ給ひて。一 期（こ）の栄耀（えいよう）万事（ばんじ）心に
まかすべしと。御 心地（こゝち）よげなる風情（ふぜい）にて。しめし
告（つげ）させ給ひしかば。相国（しやうこく）ありかたく。しん〳〵
きもにめいして。おがみたてまつらんとしたまへば。
けすがごとくにうせたまひし。御 入定（にうぢやう）とはいへとも。
其 威厳（いげん）にして。いけるがごとしおそるべく。たつ
とむべき事ならずや

【平大相国、大塔修造の事】
ある時、平大相国（たいらのだいしょうこく）が安芸国（あきのくに）の長官であった時のこと、高野山の大塔を修造しようとして、高野山に参詣し、心を込めて祈り精進を重ねられた。日ならずして御修理を成し遂げられたので、その丹誠（まごころ）が冥慮（仏・神の御心）に通じたのであろうか、大師（弘法大師空海）が現れ出られて、「一生の間、栄耀栄華はすべて思いのままになるであろう」と、御心地よさそうなご様子でお示しになり、お告げになった。相国はありがたく、深く肝に銘じて、拝み申し上げようとなさったところ、煙が消えるようにお姿が消えてしまわれた。御入定（にゅうじょう）の身とはいえ、その威厳はまるで生きておられるかのようであり、おそれ多く、尊ぶべきことではないか。

【The Matter of the Grand Minister Taira's Restoration of the Great Pagoda】
Once, when the Grand Minister Taira (Taira no Daijō-daijin) was serving as the governor of Aki Province, he made a pilgrimage to Mount Kōya with the intention of restoring the Great Pagoda (Daitō) there. He prayed with deep devotion and concentrated his spiritual efforts, and before long he accomplished the restoration. Perhaps his wholehearted sincerity had reached the mind of the divine, for the Great Master (Kōbō Daishi Kūkai) appeared before him and announced, in a most serene and auspicious manner, that "for the remainder of your life, glory and prosperity shall be yours in all things, as you wish." The Grand Minister, deeply moved and profoundly struck to the core of his being, attempted to pay his reverent respects, but the Great Master vanished as if dissolving into smoke. Though he resides in eternal meditative samādhi, his dignity was as if he were yet living — is this not something both awe-inspiring and deeply venerable?
