それより又土佐の国におもむき給ふ。かのむろ
戸よりは。三十町はかりへたゝりたる。浜辺（はまべ）に。
ひとつ勝地の有けり。空海（くうかい）伽藍（がらん）を立るによ
ろしき所とおぼしめし。こゝかしことたちもと
をり給へは。日もはや西にかたふけり。そのかたはらに
大きなる楠（くすのき）あり。いくはく年（とし）をへける共思ひわき
がたし。又木のもとを見たまへは。大きなるうつろ穴（あな）
あり。中に人の音（をと）しければ幸（さいわひ）なり。こよりは此う
つろに宿（やど）をかり。一 夜（や）をあかさばやとおぼし召。
立より御覧有ければ。さはなくして。異類（いるい）異形（いぎやう）
の天狗（てんぐ）共よりあつまりぬ。およそ日本（につほん）国中（こくちう）の

From there, he proceeded again to the province of Tosa. About thirty cho distant from that Muroto, there was an excellent piece of land by the seashore. Kukai thought it would be a suitable place to establish a monastery, and as he walked around here and there inspecting the area, the sun had already tilted toward the west. Nearby stood a great camphor tree, so ancient that it was impossible to determine how many years it had lived. When he looked at the base of the tree, there was a large hollow cavity. Hearing human voices from within, he thought it fortunate and considered borrowing lodging in this hollow to spend the night. When he approached to look more closely, he found that it was not so—rather, tengu of strange races and bizarre forms had gathered together.
