Through the power of seeing the Buddha, Kūkai immediately attained the samādhi of removing hindrances. The Tathāgata told Kūkai, saying, "You planted the roots of virtue in the past, and now you have encountered virtue again. My inner realization and secret teachings—learn these, spread the Dharma, and benefit living beings. This should be transmitted far into the future until the appearance of the next Buddha." When this was said, Kūkai inscribed this faith deeply in his heart, prostrated himself, knelt with palms joined together, and respectfully received the teaching. When he thought to return to the foot of the mountain, as before, flying vehicles, blue sheep, and white horses came and escorted him in sequence, and in an instant he returned to his former quarters at Saimyō-ji temple in Tang China.
