【守敏大唐へ護法をつかはす事】
われ此あひた聖（しやう）人の御伝法をそねみさまた
けるにやこよひ四天 王（わう）のせめをうけ命を
とられんとす。わがおろかなるあくしんのい
たすところなり。いまよりはその心をひるかへし
聖人にきぶく申たてまつるへし。此とがをゆ
るし給へとくはしくさんげ申けると也。又 我（わが）朝（てう）
南京（なんけい）の山 階（かい）寺（し）にしゆびんそうづといふ人有
けり年 戒（かい）共にたけて薫（くん）修（じゆ）日つもりたりけ
れば事にふれて空海の名宝（めいばう）をそねみ
たてまつり。はる〳〵の渡海（とかい）求法（ぐほう）あそはすこ
となるをいかなることか伝へたまはんいと心も

となしとて暫（やがて）守敏（しゆひん）唐土（たうど）へ護法をつかはして伝法の次
第をきかせける。和尚 胎蔵（たいざう）の法を伝へさづかり給ふ
時。かの護法（ごほう）御堂（だう）の戒壇（かいだん）のほとりに来り立聞して
はやく山 階（しな）寺にかへり守敏にくはしく語りける。空
海もとより神通（ぢんつう）力（りき）なれはこれをしろしめされて。の
ちの金剛（こんがう）界（かい）の大法をさつからせたまふときは
これに盗（たう）法のもの立聞をいたすなり。さらば結別
せんとて。やがてをふうじて魔（ま）の出入りなきや
うにしたまへば

現代語訳

【守敏、大唐へ護法を遣わす事】

「私はこの間、聖人（空海）の御伝法を妬み、妨げてきたためか、今夜、四天王の責めを受け、命を取られそうになりました。これは私のおろかな悪心がもたらしたことです。今よりはその心を翻し、聖人に帰伏申し上げましょう。この過ちをお許しください」と、珍賀は詳しく懺悔申し上げたということである。

また、わが国（日本）の南京、山階寺に守敏僧都という人がいた。年齢も戒（僧としての修行年数）も共に優れており、薫修（功徳の修行）も日々積み重ねていたが、何かにつけて空海の名声を妬み申し上げ、「はるばる海を渡り、法を求めなさったとはいえ、いったいどのような法を伝えられたのだろうか、まったく信じられない」といって、やがて守敏は唐土へ護法（守護の霊）を遣わして、伝法の次第を聞かせた。

和尚（恵果）が胎蔵の法を（空海に）伝え授けなさる時、あの護法は御堂の戒壇のほとりに来て立ち聞きし、早々に山階寺に帰り、守敏に詳しく語った。空海はもとより神通力をお持ちであったので、このことをご存知で、後に金剛界の大法を（恵果から）授けられなさる時、「この法を盗み聞きしようとする者がいる。それならば結界を張ろう」として、すぐに（堂を）封じ、魔が出入りできないようになさったので、

【On Shūbin Sending a Dharma Guardian to Tang China】

"During this time, perhaps because I have been jealous of and obstructing the Holy Man's (Kūkai's) dharma transmission, last night I was punished by the Four Heavenly Kings and nearly had my life taken from me. This was caused by my own foolish and wicked heart. From this day forward, I shall change my ways and submit myself humbly before the Holy Man. Please forgive me for this transgression." With these words, Zhēnhè made a detailed and sincere confession.

Furthermore, in our land of Japan, at Nankei's Yamashine-dera (Kōfuku-ji), there was a man known as the Sōzu Shūbin. Though he was advanced in both years and precepts, and had accumulated virtue through long years of devout practice, he was wont to envy Kūkai's fame and reputation at every turn. Thinking, "However far he may have crossed the sea in search of the dharma, what teachings could he possibly have received? It is utterly unbelievable," Shūbin presently dispatched a護法 (a dharma guardian spirit) to Tang China to have it report back the details of the dharma transmission.

When the Master (Huìguǒ) was transmitting and conferring the dharma of the Womb Realm (Taizō-kai) upon (Kūkai), that dharma guardian came and stood near the ordination platform of the hall to eavesdrop, then quickly returned to Yamashine-dera and recounted everything in detail to Shūbin. Kūkai, possessed of supernatural powers from the very beginning, was fully aware of this, and when he was later receiving the great dharma of the Diamond Realm (Kongō-kai) from (Huìguǒ), he declared, "There is one who is stealing and eavesdropping on this dharma. In that case, let us seal off the space," and he immediately sealed the hall so that no demonic entity could enter or exit.
