【恵果御入滅再来の事】
そも〳〵此 和尚（くはしやう）と申はみかとには御 師範（しはん）な
り。国のためには父母なり。一天下の貴賤（きせん）なげ
きかなしむもことはりにはすきたり。まことに草（さう）
木（もく）までもかなしひのいろをふくみけり。しかる
にその御にうめつまし〳〵ける夜有かたか
りしふしぎの御つげありてけり。空海御かな
しひのあまりに道場（だうぢやう）に入給ひて紅涙（こうるい）をみ
衣（ゑ）の御たもとにつゝみ。あまり丹誠（たんせい）を御心のそ
こにこらし給ひて。よもすから御 持念（ぢねん）おこたら
すまし〳〵けるに。よもしんかうにおよび人しづ
まりてのち。かそかなるともしひのかけより。

そもそも、この和尚（恵果）と申し上げる方は、帝（みかど）にとっては御師範であり、国のためには父母も同然の存在であった。天下の貴賤を問わず嘆き悲しむのも、まことに道理を超えたことではなかった。誠に、草木までもが悲しみの色を帯びるほどであった。しかして、その御入滅のあった夜、めったにない不思議なお告げがあったのである。空海は、あまりの悲しみのゆえに道場に入られ、紅涙（血の涙）を法衣の御たもとに包み、深い丹誠を御心の底に凝らし、夜もすがら御持念（念誦）を怠らずにいらっしゃったところ、夜も深更に及び、人も静まり返ったのち、かすかな灯火の陰から——

【On the Reappearance of Huiguo Following His Passing into Nirvāṇa】
Now, this venerable monk [Huiguo] was a teacher and guide to the Emperor himself, and was as a father and mother to the nation. That all people—high and low alike—should grieve and mourn was no more than what was to be expected; indeed, even the very grasses and trees seemed to take on a hue of sorrow. And yet, on the very night of his passing into nirvāṇa, there came a wondrous and most rare divine visitation. Kūkai, overwhelmed by his grief, entered the hall of practice, and holding back his crimson tears of sorrow in the sleeves of his robes, concentrated his heartfelt devotion to the very depths of his being, and throughout the entire night continued his devotional recitation without pause.
