れなれども。われ大法をあつかりたてまつり。ひ
がしにかへりて。此 密教（みつけう）を片国（へんこく）にひろめむ
ことすぎ給ひし。わが師 恵果（けいくは）大和尚にかたく
ちぎりしことに侍れは。御いとまたまはり。国に
かへり申たきよしかさねてさうし給へばみかども
わたくしならぬ御事なれば。御なごりおしくは
おぼしめしけれ供。とゞめたてまつるも法（ほう）を
えんためなるに。かえつて法をさまたぐるも
いかゞなれば。後年（こねん）をまちてあひ奉らん
去ながら。朕（ちん）が年なかばこえたり。さて海路（かいろ）は
るかに雲天（うんてん）万里（ばんり）なれは。こんじやうにかさね
てあひたてまつらんことおよびかたし。ねがはく
は一 期（ご）の後かならず仏会（ふつゑ）にあひたてまつる
へしと。かたく御けいやくまし〳〵て。菩提子（ぼだいし）
の御じゆずを取いだし給ふて。空海和尚に
たてまつり。恩（をん）勅（ちよく）にのたまひけるは。このたてま
つるじゆすは。朕（ちん）がかたみとしてもち給ひて。な
がく朕をわするゝことなかれと恩涙とともに
恩いとまこひありしかは。空海うやまつて。かの恩
じゆずをいたゞき、心はけにとまれ供。内裏（だいり）を立
出させたまひけり
現代語訳
（空海が申し上げるには、）「勅命に背くことは恐れ多いことではございますが、私は大法（密教の奥義）をお預かり申し上げ、東に帰り、この密教を（日本という）辺境の国に広めることは、すでに亡くなられた私の師・恵果大和尚と固く誓い約束したことでございますので、どうかお暇をいただき、国へ帰り申したく存じます」と、重ねてご上奏なさると、天子も「これは私事ではない（公のことである）」とお思いになりながらも、名残惜しくはお感じになられたが、「引き留めることも法（仏法）を（広める機会を）得るためのこととはいえ、かえって法の妨げとなるのも如何なものか。後年を待って（また）お会いしよう。しかしながら、朕はすでに齢半ばを過ぎた身。そして海路はるかに、雲と空の彼方、万里の距離があれば、この世でふたたびお会い申し上げることは難しい。願わくば、一期（この一生）の後、必ず仏の集い（仏会）にてお会い申し上げましょう」と、固くお約束なさって、菩提子の御数珠をお取り出しになり、空海和尚に献上され、恩勅（天子の御言葉）としておっしゃるには、「この献上する数珠は、朕の形見として持ち続けてくだされ。永く朕のことを忘れることなかれ」と、恩涙とともにお暇乞いがあったので、空海は謹んでその御数珠を頂戴し、心は（名残惜しさで）後に残るようであったが、内裏（唐の宮城）を立ち出られたのであった。
英語訳
(Kūkai said,) "Though it is a thing of great trepidation to go against the imperial command, I have received the great Law (the esoteric teachings) in trust, and returning eastward to spread this Esoteric Buddhism across our far-off land is a solemn vow I made to my late master, the Great Priest Huiguo. Therefore, I humbly ask that I be granted leave to return to my homeland." He presented this petition once more, and the Emperor, though understanding it was not a matter of private concern, could not help but feel the sorrow of parting. "To detain you would serve the cause of the Dharma, yet to obstruct the Dharma in doing so would be most ill-advised. Let us wait for a later year and meet again. And yet, I have already passed the midpoint of my years, and the sea route stretches far beyond clouds and sky for ten thousand leagues — it will be difficult indeed to meet again in this life. I pray that after this one lifetime has passed, we shall surely meet at the gathering of the Buddhas." With these words, the Emperor made a firm covenant, then took out a rosary of bodhi seeds and presented it to the Priest Kūkai. In the words of his gracious imperial command, he said, "Keep this rosary I offer you as a memento of me, and never forget me for as long as you live." With tears of gracious sentiment, the Emperor bade farewell. Kūkai reverently received the rosary, and though his heart lingered behind (reluctant to leave), he departed from the imperial palace.
