それも聖人（しやうにん）に立そひつゝ。いづくまでも。を
しわたり。求法をまもるべしとの御せいぐわん
ありしかば。聖人（しやうにん）よろこばしくおぼしめして。
渡唐（とたう）ありしが。ことゆへなく。大法（だいほう）伝授（でんじゅ）御心のまゝ
にして。露（つゆ）計（ばかり）のさまたげもなく。御 帰朝（きてう）ありし
事。御 神（かみ）の御まもりめなりと。ありかたく
て。わすれたまはねば。まず豊前（ぶぜん）の国へいたり
給ひて。賀春（かすい）の大明神（みやうじん）へまいり。御 宝前（ほうぜん）にて。
のたまひけるは。仏法（ぶつほう）護持（ごぢ）のために。われはる
〳〵と。万里（ばんり）の波（なみ）をわたり今 本郷（ほんきやう）に帰り。こ
とに大 法（ほう）をつたはりたる事。ひとへに明神（みやうじん）の御
加護なり。よろこばしき事。心肝（しんかん）にそみける
いま此御山を見るに。岩石（がんせき）たかくたゝみて。草（さう）
木（もく）おふる事なし。われ此浜に草木（くさき）を生（しやう）じて。
たてまつるべしとのおたまへば。明神（みやうじん）ことに御 納受（のふじゆ）
のけしきあらはれて。御簾（みす）もゆるぎ。綺帳（きちやう）も
うごひて。御よろこひのよしをしめし給ひけり扨
和尚（くはしやう）香水（かうずい）を御 加持（かち）まし〳〵て。かのかはけるがん
ぜきたゝみし山にそゝぎ給へは。にはかに草も木
もおひしげりて。岩石（がんせき）たちまちにあをくうるは
しき山とぞなりにける。千株（せんちう）万株（まんちう）の松のみど

（前ページより続き）「自分も聖人に寄り添いながら、どこまでも共に渡り、求法をお守り申し上げましょう」との御誓願がありましたので、聖人はたいそう喜ばしくお思いになって、唐へ渡られた。何事もなく、大法の伝授もご心のままにかない、露ほどの障害もなく御帰朝なさったことは、御神のご加護によるものであると、ありがたく思われ、お忘れになれないので、まず豊前の国へおいでになって、賀春の大明神へ参られ、御宝前にて、こうおっしゃった。「仏法護持のために、私ははるばる万里の波を渡り、今や本郷に帰り、特に大法を伝えることができましたのは、ひとえに明神のご加護によるものです。喜ばしいことは、心の底に染み入るほどでございます。今この御山を見れば、岩石が高く積み重なって、草木の生えることがありません。私がこの浜辺に草木を生じさせて、お供え申し上げましょう」とおっしゃると、明神はことに御納受のご様子が現れて、御簾も揺れ動き、綺帳（きちょう）も動いて、お喜びの由をお示しになった。そこで和尚は香水を御加持なされて、かの乾いた岩石の積み重なった山に注がれると、たちまち草も木も生い茂り、岩石はたちまちにして青々と美しい山となった。千株万株の松の緑は、種もなくして岩の根元に茂り、南の枝北の枝には花が——

(Continued from the previous page) "I, too, shall accompany the holy man wherever he goes, crossing the seas alongside him, and shall protect his quest for the Dharma" — such was the sacred vow the deity had made. The holy man was greatly heartened by this, and duly crossed over to Tang China. Without any mishap, the transmission of the Great Dharma proceeded exactly as he had hoped, and he returned to Japan without the slightest obstacle. Feeling deeply that this was all due to the divine protection of the gods, and unable to forget this debt of gratitude, he first traveled to the province of Buzen and visited the Great Deity of Gasui. Standing before the sacred altar, he spoke thus: "It is solely thanks to the protection of the Deity that I was able to cross ten thousand leagues of waves, traveling far and wide for the preservation of the Buddhist teachings, and have now returned to my homeland, having received the transmission of the Great Dharma in particular. The joy I feel is something that penetrates to the very depths of my heart and mind. Now, looking upon this sacred mountain, I see that the rocks are piled high and that no grasses or trees grow here. I shall cause grasses and trees to grow upon this shore, and offer them up to you." When he said this, the Great Deity clearly showed signs of acceptance — the sacred blind (misu) swayed, and the brocade curtains (kichō) stirred — thus making known the deity's delight. Then the Venerable Master performed a ritual empowerment (kaji) upon sacred water and poured it over the mountain of dry, piled rocks. Immediately, grasses and trees grew thick and lush, and the rocky mountain was instantly transformed into a verdant and beautiful peak. A thousand and then ten thousand pine trees spread their green, growing from the roots of the rocks as if from no seed at all, and upon the branches to the south and north, flowers——
