【万里の火難をすくひ給ふ事】
それより。空海（くうかい）をみやこぢかくの御 庵室（あんしつ）に
をきたてまつり。つねにみかどよりめして。
御法（みのり）をきこしめしける。ある時 和尚（くはしやう）の御 住僧（ぢうそう）へ
勅使（ちよくし）きたり給ふに。折ふし和尚。西（にし）のかたにむ
かつて。三たび水をそゝき給ふ。ちよくしも
ゆへをとひたてまつらるゝに和尚こたへたまはく
たゞ今大唐（たいたう）国（こく）裡（り）の青龍（しやうりう）寺（じ）に火失（くはしつ）の事有。
さればそれをすくはんために。これより水をそ

もひをなして。まもりゐければ。そゝぎた

それより、空海を都に近い御庵室に置き申し上げ、常に帝より召されて、御法（みのり）をお聞きになられていた。ある時、和尚の御住居へ勅使が参られたところ、折しも和尚は西の方角に向かって、三度水を注いでおられた。勅使もその理由をお尋ね申し上げると、和尚はお答えになるには——「ただ今、大唐国の青龍寺に火事が起きております。それゆえ、その火を救わんがために、こちらより水を注いでおります」とおっしゃった。勅使は、驚き畏まった思いをなして、見守っていると、注がれた水はたちまち雨雲となって、西の方角へ——

【The Matter of Saving Qinglong Temple from the Calamity of Fire Across Ten Thousand Leagues】
From that time onward, Kūkai was lodged in a hermitage close to the capital, and was frequently summoned by the Emperor to hear the holy teachings. One day, when an imperial envoy came to the Master's residence, he found the Master facing the western direction and pouring water three times. The envoy asked the reason for this, and the Master replied: "At this very moment, a fire has broken out at Qinglong Temple in Great Tang China. Therefore, I am pouring water from here in order to save it from the flames." Hearing this, the envoy was filled with awe and astonishment, and watched intently. The water that was poured immediately transformed into rain clouds and drifted toward the west——
