和尚（くはしやう）しばらく東大寺（とうだいじ）に住（ぢう）し給ひしが。又みやこ
に御のぼりあつて。御じゆほうまし〳〵けるところ
の真言（しんごん）秘密（ひみつ）のをしへをぞひろめ給ひける。抑（そも〳〵）此
法（ほう）と申すは。如来（によらい）の御 秘密（ひみつ）諸仏（しよぶつ）の御 内証（ないしやう）にして。
即身（そくしん）成仏（じやうぶつ）の旨（むね）をのべたまひ。国をおさめ。人を
利する事。七宗（しちしう）にこえたるよしをそうもんし給ふ。
此時 顕綱（けんかう）にかゝりて。密教（みつけう）の法水（ほつすい）をなめざる諸宗（しよしう）
の学徒（がくと）あらそひをなして。これをゆるさず。夏（なつ）のむ
しの氷（こほり）をうたがへるがごとし。かゝりしかば空海（くうかい）
和尚（くはしやう）をめされ。さて諸宗の名徳をめして。
殿（でん）におひて。おの〳〵我宗（がしう）のふかきむねを論（ろん）

和尚（空海）はしばらく東大寺にご滞在になりましたが、また都へお上りになって、御修法（みずほう）をなさっていたところの真言秘密の教えを広めていらっしゃいました。そもそもこの法と申しますのは、如来の御秘密、諸仏の御内証（ないしょう）であり、即身成仏の旨を述べ、国を治め、人を利することが、七宗を超えている由を奏聞（そうもん）なさいました。
この時、顕教（けんぎょう）にかかわり、密教の法水を味わったことのない諸宗の学徒たちが異議を唱えて、これを認めようとしませんでした。まるで夏の虫が氷を疑うようなものでありました。そこで（朝廷は）空海和尚をお召しになり、また諸宗の名僧高徳をもお召しになって、殿上において、それぞれが自分の宗の深い宗旨を論じ（合うことになりました）。

After dwelling at Tōdai-ji Temple for a time, the master Kūkai returned once more to the capital, where he continued his ritual practices and spread the teachings of Shingon's esoteric mysteries. Now, this teaching, it is said, represents the secret treasury of the Tathāgata and the innermost realization of all the Buddhas. Kūkai presented to the throne a memorial setting forth the doctrine of attaining Buddhahood in this very body (*sokushin jōbutsu*), and proclaiming that in governing the nation and benefiting the people, this teaching surpassed the Seven Schools.
At this time, the scholars of the various schools, who were engaged only in the exoteric teachings and had never tasted the waters of the Dharma that is esoteric Buddhism, raised objections and refused to accept this claim. It was as though insects of summer were doubting the existence of ice. And so Kūkai was summoned to court, and the eminent and virtuous monks of the various schools were likewise summoned, and in the great hall each was to set forth and debate the profound principles of his own school.
