うやまひ。諸宗（しよしう）の賢哲（けんてつ）疑謗（きはう）の舌（した）をまき。随喜（ずいき）の
掌（たなこゝろ）を合せけり。見聞し人。皆（みな）身の毛（け）もよだつて涙（なみだ）をな
がして貴（たつとみ）ける。和尚（くはしやう）しばらくあつて。本（もと）のかたちに成給□
て。生仏（しやうふつ）不二なる旨（むね）をあらはし給へば。満座（まんざ）の諸宗（しよしう）こと
ばなくて、只（たゞ）和尚（くはしやう）を礼拝（らいはい）してこそ立れけれ。其のち
真言（しんごん）を 七宗（しう）の最上（さいじやう）となし給ふ。されは諸（しよ）知識（ちしき）の中に。

まし〳〵けり。法敵（ほうてき）の諸僧（しよそう）も。皆々和尚の門徒（もんと）と成て。

現代語訳
（諸宗の高僧たちは疑いや批判の言葉を収め、）随喜の掌を合わせました。その場に居合わせた人々はみな身の毛がよだち、涙を流して尊び奉りました。和尚はしばらくして元のお姿にお戻りになり、生仏不二（しょうぶつふに）の旨をお示しになると、満座の諸宗の者たちは言葉もなく、ただ和尚を礼拝して退席したのでした。その後、真言宗を七宗の最上のものとお定めになりました。こうして諸々の高僧たちの中で、空海和尚を帝の御師として仰ぎ奉り、御帰依はいよいよ篤くなりました。かつて法の敵であった諸々の僧たちも、みな和尚の門徒となり、秘密の深い法を承って、灌頂の壇に望むようになりました。真言のすばらしさが、わが朝（日本）においてはこれが初めてのことであったのです。

The wise masters of the various schools fell silent, retracting the tongues of their doubt and slander, and pressed their palms together in reverent joy (*zuiki*). All those who had witnessed the event stood with their hair on end, shedding tears of veneration. After a time, the Venerable Kūkai returned to his original form, and revealed the purport that sentient beings and the Buddha are not two (*shōbutsu funi*). At this, all those assembled from the various schools were left utterly speechless, and withdrew from the hall having done nothing but bow in worship before the Venerable One. Thereafter, Shingon was established as the supreme school among the Seven Schools. Thus, among all the eminent teachers of the realm, Kūkai was revered as the Emperor's personal preceptor, and His Majesty's devotion to him grew ever more profound. Even those monks who had formerly been adversaries in the Dharma all became disciples of the Venerable One, received the profound teachings of the esoteric tradition, and sought admission to the platform of abhiṣeka (*kanjō*). The glory of Shingon was, in our land of Japan, without precedent.
