携（たずさへ）る着替（きがえ）もなく路頭（ろとう）にさまやう
こときありすがた目もあてられす
また中には土蔵はなくとも井戸なと
へ十分に詰込其上へぬれむしろ
土をかふせ土不自由なる処は竈（かまど）
をくだき其土を上へ置程よく
助る処もありまた土蔵ありなから
変難に驚き目 塗（ぬり）もせず狼狽（あはてゝ）
逃去り焼落るもあり火の筋にかゝ
る処はいかほと大丈夫の土蔵たり
ともたすかりかたくまことに廣
き洛中にて草木の青葉なと
は見る事叶ぬまて焼亡せし中
に西本願寺は巍然（ぎせん）として別条な
く是は天明の大火にも焼残り
其後時々近火もあるといへとも焼

携える着替えもなく路頭に迷い歩き回ることもあり、その姿は目も当てられない。
また中には土蔵はなくとも井戸などに十分に（家財を）詰め込み、その上に濡れ筵や土をかぶせ、土が不自由な場所では竈を壊してその土を上に置いて程よく助かった所もある。また土蔵がありながら変事に驚き、泥塗りもせず狼狈して逃げ去り、焼け落ちてしまうものもあった。火の筋にかかる場所では、どれほど大丈夫な土蔵であっても助かり難く、まことに広い洛中において草木の青葉なども見ることが叶わないまでに焼亡した中で、西本願寺は巍然として別条なく、これは天明の大火にも焼け残り、その後時々近火もあるというけれども焼け

With no change of clothes to carry, some wandered the streets, their appearance pitiful beyond description.
Among others, even those without storehouses managed to stuff their belongings into wells and such places, covering them with wet straw mats and earth. Where earth was scarce, they broke down their cooking stoves and used that earth on top, and some were saved quite well by this method. Yet others, despite having storehouses, panicked at the disaster and fled in confusion without applying mud coating, only to see their buildings burn down. In areas caught in the fire's path, no matter how sturdy the storehouse, survival was difficult. Truly, throughout the vast capital of Kyoto, the destruction was so complete that not even green leaves on trees and plants could be seen. Amidst this devastation, Nishi Honganji Temple stood majestically unharmed. This temple had also survived the Great Fire of Tenmei, and though there have been nearby fires from time to time since then, it has not burned
