僧侶たちまでもが逃げ出した後で、誰も遺体を引き取り安置する者もなく、ただ呆然として途方に暮れるばかりでどうしようもない状態であった。中京あたりでは、出産した母子と金子七百両を長持に入れ、手代二人と主人とで一緒に担ぎ出したのだが、道中で南風が激しく吹き、あたり四方が燃え上がったため、手代たちは逃げ去り、主人一人ではどうすることもできず、大声をあげて「この長持には人と金七百両が入っている。この長持を持って走ってくれれば、七百両は差し上げる」と叫んだけれども、誰一人として振り向く者もなく、煙はだんだんと息も詰まるほどになり、火はますます激しく燃え上がるので、主人も泣く泣くその場を逃げ出すより他なく、人を頼んで後から見に来てみると、わずかな時間が経っただけなのに、長持はもはや一筋の煙となって立ち上り、母子とも死骸と思われるものが残り、七百両

Even the monks and accompanying priests had fled, and there was no one left to claim and properly place the bodies. People were simply stunned and bewildered, utterly helpless. In the Nakagyo area, a mother and child who had just given birth, along with 700 ryō in gold, were placed in a long chest (nagamochi), and two shop assistants and their master carried it out together. However, on the road, the south wind blew fiercely and fires erupted in all four directions. The assistants fled, leaving the master alone and unable to manage. He cried out loudly, "This chest contains people and 700 ryō in gold! If you carry this chest and run with it, I will give you the 700 ryō!" But not a single person turned to look. The smoke became so thick it was suffocating, and the fire grew increasingly fierce, so the master too had no choice but to flee the scene in tears. When he asked someone to go back and look later, even though only a short time had passed, the chest had already become nothing but a wisp of smoke rising up, leaving behind what appeared to be the corpses of mother and child, and the 700 ryō
