嵯峨の天わう。弘仁（こうにん）十一年空海僧都に。伝灯（でんとう）大法 師（し）
位（ゐ）を給はる。おなじき十四年正月に東寺（どうじ）をもつて
空海に給はり。西寺（さいじ）をもつて守敏（しゆびん）に給はりけり。然（しかる）に
空海は諸国（しよこく）修行の折りから也。守敏（しゆびん）僧都其間に。みかと
の御あたりにちかつきたてまつりて。さま〳〵のき
どくをあらはし給ひけり。あるとき守敏（しゆびん）みかどの御 前（まへ）
にまいられけるに。御くわしに生栗の出たりけるを。守（しゆ）
敏（びん）とりてふところにいれらえ。すこし有て取いだし
けるに焼栗（やきくり）になりにけり。みかどを始（はじ）め奉り。公卿臣下
きどくの思ひをなし給ひけり。みかど御茶をこはせ給ふ

嵯峨天皇は弘仁十一年に空海に僧都として伝灯大法師位を授けられた。同じく十四年正月に東寺を空海に与え、西寺を守敏に与えられた。しかし空海は諸国修行の最中であった。守敏僧都はその間に、帝の御側近くにお仕えして、様々な奇跡を現されていた。

あるとき守敏が帝の御前に参上した際、お菓子に生栗が出されていたのを、守敏は取って懐に入れられた。しばらくしてから取り出してみると、焼栗になっていた。帝をはじめ奉り、公卿臣下は皆奇跡だと思われた。帝がお茶を所望された。

Emperor Saga, in the 11th year of Kōnin, granted Kūkai the position of Sōzu with the rank of Dentō Daihōshi. In the same year, in the first month of the 14th year, he granted Tōji Temple to Kūkai and Saiji Temple to Shubin. However, Kūkai was in the midst of ascetic training throughout the provinces. During this time, Sōzu Shubin served close to the Emperor and displayed various miraculous powers.

On one occasion when Shubin appeared before the Emperor, raw chestnuts were served as sweets. Shubin took some and put them in his robe. After a short while, when he took them out, they had become roasted chestnuts. Beginning with the Emperor, all the court nobles and retainers regarded this as miraculous. The Emperor requested tea.
