翻刻

守敏（しゆびん）にむかはせ給ひて。あまりにあつく侍へり。これ
さましてと仰せけり。守敏かしこまりて印（ゐん）を結（むすび）
給へば。その湯（ゆ）たちまちにさめて氷（こほり）のことし。是をい
かにあまりにすゞしと仰せけるを。又印をむすび
給ふにその水。にはかにわきあがりて。御手にももち
給はず。かゝるきどくこそならびなく侍へれと。御
きしよく。あさからず。頃は冬のことなるに。御前に大
ばち有て。まはりきびしくたてつめたれば。あつ
くして。みかど御あせながれさせ給ふ。守敏すなはち
印をむすび給ふに。其 火気（くわき）たちまちにしめりて。

さむさかぎりなし。かくて御前をたち。南殿（なんでん）の
さくらにむかひ呪（しゆ）し給ふに。花さきみだれて
あたゝかなる事春のことし。立のきけれは
もとの冬也。かゝるきどくの聖人は。またもならび
はあらじと。かんじ給ふもことはりなり。公
卿殿上人も。空海なんどはこの事つかにもをよぶ
べからずとこそ思ひあはれけれ

現代語訳

守敏に向かって仰せられた。「あまりに熱く感じられる。これを冷ましてくれ」と命じられた。守敏は恐縮して印を結ばれると、その湯はたちまち冷めて氷のようになった。「これではあまりに冷たすぎる」と仰せになると、また印を結ばれるとその水は、急に沸き上がって、お手にも持てないほどになった。「このような奇跡は並ぶものがない」と、御機嫌も浅からぬものであった。

時は冬のことで、御前に大きな火鉢があって、周りを厳重に立て詰めてあったので、暑くて帝は汗を流しておられた。守敏がすぐに印を結ばれると、その火の気はたちまち湿って、寒さが限りなく感じられた。

こうして御前を立ち、南殿の桜に向かって呪文を唱えられると、花が咲き乱れて暖かなこと春のようであった。その場を離れると元の冬に戻った。このような奇跡を行う聖人は、他に並ぶ者はあるまいと感心されるのも当然である。公卿や殿上人たちも、空海などではこのようなことには到底及ぶまいと思ったのであった。

英語訳

The Emperor addressed Shubin, saying, "It feels too hot. Please cool this down." Shubin humbly formed a mudra with his hands, and the hot water immediately cooled and became like ice. When the Emperor said, "This is now too cold," Shubin formed another mudra, and the water suddenly boiled up so much that it could not even be held in one's hands. "Such miracles are truly incomparable," and His Majesty's pleasure was evident.

It was winter at the time, and there was a large brazier before the Emperor, with screens set up tightly around it, making it so hot that the Emperor was perspiring. When Shubin immediately formed a mudra, the heat suddenly dampened and limitless cold was felt.

Then he left the imperial presence and faced the cherry tree of the Southern Palace, chanting incantations. The flowers bloomed profusely and it became as warm as spring. When he moved away from the spot, it returned to winter. It was natural for the Emperor to be impressed that such a miracle-working holy man had no equal. The court nobles and courtiers also thought that even Kūkai could never come close to accomplishing such feats.
