又こうにんのころ。くうかいそうつにおほせ
て。大極殿（たいこくでん）。しゆしやくもんの。がくをかゝせら
れけるに。あまりにひつせいのいたり給
ひて。大こくでんの。大の字の一もんじ。まん
中。すこしきれてみえたり。朱雀門の朱
の字も。うへの一もん字。なかすこし。きれて
みえければ。小野（をの）のたうふう。これをわら

また弘仁の頃、空海僧都に命じて、大極殿と朱雀門の額を書かせられたが、あまりに筆勢が激しく至っていたので、大極殿の「大」の字の一画目が真ん中で少し切れて見えた。朱雀門の「朱」の字も、上の一画目が中ほどで少し切れて見えたので、小野道風がこれを笑って、「あまりに筆勢が過ぎているではないか。大極殿は火極殿、朱雀門は米雀門である」と申された。その罰で、道風は

Also, during the Kōnin era, Emperor [Saga] commanded Kūkai Sōzu to write the plaques for Daikokuden (Great Polar Hall) and Suzakumon (Vermillion Bird Gate). His brushwork was so vigorous and intense that the first stroke of the character "大" (dai/great) in Daikokuden appeared slightly broken in the middle. The character "朱" (shu/vermillion) in Suzakumon also had its top stroke appearing slightly broken in the middle. Seeing this, Ono no Tōfū laughed and said, "The brushwork is excessively vigorous! Daikokuden has become Kakokuden (Fire Polar Hall), and Suzakumon has become Beijaku-mon (Rice Sparrow Gate)." As divine punishment for this, Tōfū...
