狼狽（うろた）へて夫婦子孫も散々に成或は烟りに巻れ老少は
人馬にふまれ死するなり世中に火災程おそろしき物なし水死は
衣類面体に見覚あれとも焦（こげ）死するものは真黒に成て兄弟
のわかちもなし火を剋（こく）する物水なれども雨天にてもたゞちに消
ず大火と成ては水も人力も及ばぬ也
一火の粉を防ぐには古き椶櫚（しゆろ）箒に水を付て消すへしと老人
の教なり
一方位の吉凶を弁（わきま）へて逃る者は二度焼け三度やけには逢ざるべし
鎮火（ひぶせ）の歌 日蓮大菩薩
霜柱氷のはりに雪のけた水のたる木に火こそ消けれ
これを写して棟木にはり置べし
ぬるぞ根太たのむぞたる木やなか竹何ごとあらはおこせむねの木
右の二首毎夜 唱（とな）へて臥すべし
よく聞けよ蛍程なる煙草の火心ゆるせは早鐘の声
現代語訳
（前頁より続く）うろたえて、夫婦や子孫もばらばらになり、あるいは煙に巻かれ、老人や子供は人や馬に踏まれて死ぬのである。世の中に火災ほど恐ろしいものはない。水死の場合は衣類や顔立ちに見覚えがあるが、焼け死んだ者は真っ黒になって、兄弟であっても見分けがつかない。火を克するものは水であるが、雨天であってもただちには消えない。大火となっては水も人の力も及ばないのである。
一、火の粉を防ぐには、古い棕櫚箒に水を付けて消すべしというのが老人の教えである。
一、方位の吉凶をわきまえて逃げる者は、二度焼け・三度焼けには遭わないであろう。

(Continued from previous page) — one falls into panic, and husbands, wives, and children are scattered in all directions; some are engulfed in smoke, while the elderly and young are trampled to death by people and horses. There is nothing in this world as terrifying as a fire. In the case of drowning, one can still recognize the body by clothing and features, but those who perish in flames turn completely black, so that even siblings cannot be told apart. Water is what overcomes fire, yet even in rainy weather, a fire does not immediately go out. Once it becomes a great conflagration, neither water nor human effort can prevail against it.
1. To extinguish falling sparks, one should wet an old palm-fiber (*shuro*) broom and use it to beat them out — this is the teaching of elders.
1. Those who understand the auspicious and inauspicious directions and flee accordingly should not suffer second or third experiences of being burned out.

*Shimo-bashira / kōri no hari ni / yuki no keta / mizu no taruki ni / hi koso kiekere*
(Frost pillars, rafters of ice, beams of snow — in timbers of water, let fire be extinguished!)
This verse should be copied out and affixed to the ridgepole of one's home.
*Nuruzo nedai / tanomuzo taruki / yanaka-take / nanigoto araba / okose mune no ki*
(The floor joists are soaked; I rely on you, rafters; bamboo in the roof — should anything happen, rouse the ridgepole!)
The above two verses should be recited every night before going to sleep.
*Yoku kike yo / hotaru hodo naru / tabako no hi / kokoro yuruse ba / hayagane no koe*
(Listen well — a tobacco ember no bigger than a firefly: let your guard down, and you will hear the sound of the alarm bell!)
