火の用心狂歌 立川焉馬
台所の唐人たちも朝夕に 我が日の本を疎かにするな
一、火災の大小を知る事
人々がよく知っている方法であるが、参考のために記す。
左の手で占う方法：
親指＝火 人差し指＝風 中指＝水
（親指：正月・四月・七月・十月＝寅・巳・申・亥の月）
（人差し指：二月・五月・八月・十一月＝卯・午・酉・子の月）
（中指：三月・六月・九月・十二月＝辰・未・戌・丑の月）
この占いの方法は、親指を正月と定めて、三本の指を十二月まで順番に数える。正月の内であれば人差し指から一日、二日と数え始め、何日目に当たる所が火であれば大火、風であれば中火、水であれば小火である。中指は水であるが三に当たるので火の数である。故に明暦三年、延享三年、文化三年の類いがある。
また三月に大火がある。正月は寅（木）の月なので風が多い。三月は辰（土）の月で火を好む理屈である。当文政十二年己丑三月二十一日は水に当たって大火であったが、火の年であって燃え出したのも巳の刻（午前十時頃）で火が盛んである。二は金の数で火が金に克つ。二月は卯（木）の月で木が火を生ずる。因って失火が多いのであろうか。

This is a method well known by people, but I record it here for reference.
Divination using the left hand:
Thumb = Fire, Index finger = Wind, Middle finger = Water
(Thumb: 1st, 4th, 7th, 10th months = months of Tiger, Snake, Monkey, Boar)
(Index finger: 2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th months = months of Rabbit, Horse, Rooster, Rat)
(Middle finger: 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th months = months of Dragon, Sheep, Dog, Ox)
The method of this divination is to designate the thumb as the first month and count through the three fingers in order through the twelve months. If it is within the first month, start counting from the index finger as the first day, second day, and so on. Where the day falls - if it is fire, it will be a great fire; if wind, a medium fire; if water, a small fire. The middle finger represents water, but since it corresponds to three, it is a fire number. Therefore, there are examples like Meireki 3, Enkyō 3, and Bunka 3.
Also, great fires occur in the third month. The first month is the month of Tiger (Wood), so there are many winds. The third month is the month of Dragon (Earth), which favors fire by principle. In Bunsei 12, Year of the Ox, on the 21st day of the 3rd month, though it corresponded to water, there was a great fire, but it was a fire year and the blaze started at the hour of Snake (around 10 AM) when fire is vigorous. Two is the number of metal, and fire overcomes metal. The second month is the month of Rabbit (Wood), and wood generates fire. Therefore, accidental fires are frequent.
