台所唐人たちも朝夕に我ひのもとをおろそかにすな
一火災の大小を知る事人々よく知りたる法なれとも因（ちなみ）にしるす
左の手 大ゆび火 さしゆび風 中ゆび水

右のくり様は大ゆびを正月と定め三本のゆびを十二月迄順にくる
正月の内なればさしゆびから朔日二日とくり始め幾日と当る
所火なれは大火・風は中火・水は小火也中ゆびは水なれとも三に
あたりて火の数なり故に明暦三延享三文化三年の類ひ
又三月大火あり正月｜寅（木）の月ゆへ風多し三月｜辰（土）の月にて火を
このむ理也当文政十二丑三月廿一日水に当りて大火なれとも火の
年にして燃（もへ）出しも巳の中刻火盛ん也二は金の数にて火｜剋（こく）
金二月｜卯（木）の月木生火也因て失火多きにや
一巳午は火に属（ぞく）し辰巳は火と水を好む辰巳午の刻限に

火の用心の狂歌 古 立川焉馬
台所（たいどころ）の唐人（とうじん）たちも朝夕に、我が日の元（ひのもと）をおろそかにするな。
一、火災の大小を知る方法について。人々がよく知っている法であるが、参考のために記しておく。
左手の 親指＝火 人差し指＝風 中指＝水

右の繰り方は、親指を正月と定め、三本の指を十二月まで順に繰る。正月のうちであれば、人差し指から朔日（一日）・二日と繰り始め、何日かに当たった所が火であれば大火、風であれば中火、水であれば小火である。中指は水であるが、三に当たって火の数となる。ゆえに明暦三（年）・延享三（年）・文化三（年）の類いの大火が起きた。また三月に大火があるのは、正月は寅（木）の月ゆえ風が多く、三月は辰（土）の月にて火を好む理（ことわり）による。当文政十二年丑の三月二十一日は水に当たって大火となったが、火の年にして、燃え出した刻も巳の中刻（午前十時頃）であり火が盛んになった。二は金の数にて、火は金を克（こく）す。二月は卯（木）の月にて、木は火を生ず。よって失火が多いのではないか。

Even the "Chinese folk" of the kitchen — morning and evening, do not be negligent with your fire here in the Land of the Rising Sun (*Hinomoto*).
1. On knowing the scale of a fire disaster. This is a method that people generally know well, but I record it here for reference.

The method of counting is as follows: designate the thumb as the 1st month, and count through the three fingers up to the 12th month in order. If within the 1st month, begin counting from the index finger starting from the 1st day, the 2nd day, and so on; wherever the count lands — if it falls on "Fire," it will be a great fire; if on "Wind," a moderate fire; if on "Water," a small fire. Although the middle finger corresponds to Water, when the count of three falls upon it, it becomes the number of Fire. Hence fires of the magnitude of the Meireki 3rd year, Enkyō 3rd year, and Bunka 3rd year occurred. Furthermore, the reason there are great fires in the 3rd month is that the 1st month being the month of the Tiger (Wood) brings much wind, and the 3rd month, being the month of the Dragon (Earth), is favorable to fire. On the 21st day of the 3rd month of the current Bunsei 12th year, the Ox year, although the count fell on Water and yet a great fire occurred, it was a Fire year, and moreover the fire broke out during the middle of the Snake hour (around 10 a.m.), when fire is at its most powerful. Two is the number of Metal, and Fire overcomes Metal. The 2nd month is the month of the Rabbit (Wood), and Wood generates Fire — hence there may be many instances of accidental fire.
