孔方（かうほう）＃1ふた筋を施（ほどこ）して帰りたるに朝風やゝ烈（はげ）しければ悉（こと〴〵）
く調度（てうど）ども襖（ふすま）なども庫（くら）に納（おさ）めつる頃神田なる佐久間町
より火おこれりとぞされども空（から）家を焼たるのみにて蔵も残
りけるとかやげにも大師の 御 告（ つげ）にてかゝる 災（ わざは）ひある事を
賢（かしこ）くも 悟（さと）りしは信ある人の徳也いはゆる一日の計はあしたに有と
の金言恐るへきことにこそはた東都の火災かそふるにいとま
あらずといへとも咽（のど）もと過ては熱（あつ）さ忘るゝ習ひなれば
防火（ほうくは）用心土と名つけて拙（つたな）き筆につゞる物から浅間の山
の烟りならで遠近人の咎（とが）めん事をもいとはす風の神
のあれます日毎には我うま子等が要慎（ようじん）すべきことを
願ふになん有ける

現代語訳
銭（孔方）を二文施して帰ったところ、朝風がやや激しくなってきたので、調度品や襖なども残らず蔵に収めた頃、神田の佐久間町から火事が起きたという。それでも空き家を焼いただけで、蔵も無事に残ったとのことである。まことに大師のお告げにより、かかる災難のあることを賢くも悟ったのは、信仰ある人の徳というものである。いわゆる「一日の計は朝にあり」という金言は、まことに恐るべきことである。さて、江戸の火災を数え挙げるにはいとまがないとはいえ、「喉元過ぎれば熱さ忘れる」のが世の習いであるから、
「防火用心土」と名付けて、拙い筆でつづるものの、浅間山の煙ならぬ、遠近の人々に咎められることも厭わず、風の神が荒れる日ごとに、我が子らが十分に用心すべきことを願ってやまない次第である。

He gave the palanquin bearers two coins (kōhō) and returned home. As the morning wind had grown somewhat strong, he proceeded to store all his furnishings and fusuma sliding doors in the storehouse — and it was just around that time that a fire broke out in Sakuma-chō in Kanda. However, it burned only an empty house, and the storehouse remained unharmed. Truly, it was through the oracle of the Great Teacher (Kōbō Daishi) that he wisely perceived the coming of such a disaster — this is the virtue of a person of faith. The golden saying, "The plan for the day lies in the morning," is indeed a thing to be feared and heeded.
Now, although there is no end to enumerating the fire disasters of Edo, since it is human nature to forget the heat once it has passed the throat (i.e., to forget hardship once it is over), I have written this down — naming it "Bōka Yōjin Tsuchi" (Essential Earthen Precautions Against Fire) — with my humble brush. Heedless of reproach from people near and far, who may find fault with this smoke rising not from Mount Asama but from my own pen, it is my earnest wish that on every day the God of Wind rages, my own children and their kind will take the utmost care.
