義 融（ゆう）老（らう）人とて頗（すこぶる）天文に明らかなる翁あり予此叟に随
ひて廿八宿七 曜（よう）の形（かたち）を見覚んと夜毎庭上に出て
教えを受しが容易（たやす）く熟（じゆく）することを得ずしかはあれど世
界の方位を知ること他国へゆきてもしるく夜分の刻限をさ
とることを得る也翁常にいへらく今泰平の御代に
産（うま）れて万民枕を高うしてよき衣を着美食をくらひて
歓楽をきはむる輩多し殊に近代居宅の結構華麗

【左丁】
義融老人といって、大変天文に精通した翁がいた。私はこの老人に従い、二十八宿・七曜の形（星の配置）を見覚えようと、夜ごとに庭に出て教えを受けたが、容易に習熟することはできなかった。しかしそれでも、世界（天地）の方位を知ること、他国へ行っても（方角が）わかること、夜の刻限（時刻）を悟ることができるようになった。翁が常日頃言っていたことには、「今や泰平の御代に生まれて、万民が枕を高くして、良い衣を着、美食を食らい、歓楽を極める者が多い。とりわけ近代は、居宅の造りが華麗を極め……」

There was an elder known as Old Man Giyu, who was exceedingly well-versed in astronomy. Wishing to learn and memorize the configurations of the Twenty-Eight Lunar Mansions and the Seven Luminaries, I followed this old man and went out into the garden every night to receive his instruction—yet I could not easily attain mastery of the subject. Even so, I came to understand the cardinal directions of the world, to be able to find my bearings even when traveling to distant provinces, and to discern the time of night. The elder would often say: "Born into this age of great peace, there are many among the people who sleep soundly, wear fine clothing, eat delicious food, and pursue pleasure to its fullest extent.
