武家は貧（まづ）しけれは町家へ対（たい）してはおもてぶせなること少
からず他国の城下には衣服の制度（せいと）厳重（けんぢう）にして格（かく）に
より木綿（もめん）を着ることなれは已下の身分は勿論也
一京大坂の食物を味（あぢは）ひみるに江戸にまさる物更になしもと
より江戸のくひ倒れと諺（ことわざ）の如く日本橋通りの夜商ひ皆
食物にして裏店の渡世 莫（ばく）大也其外料理茶屋軒を並べ
一町毎に鱣（うなぎ）や又は猪（ちよ）鹿（ろく）雞（にはとり）鼈（すつほん）等を商ふもの多しそれを補菜
と心得て身をそこなふもの有人々子孫の延命繁昌を願はぬはなし
されは殺生と不浄の肉食をばいみたき物也と彼翁 歎息（たんそく）せり
一世人衣食住の三つをはぶく時は失費（しつつい）も薄（うす）く可（か）成に暮し
て非常（ひぜう）の用意を肝要（かんよう）にすへし花の江戸日にまして
繁栄をなしいさゝかの空地もなく武蔵野のはし〳〵迄軒より
のきに出入る月をながめぬることげに有かたき御代なれとも

武家は貧しければ町家に対して面目を失うことが少なくない。他国の城下町では衣服の制度が厳重で、身分によって木綿を着ることになっているため、それ以下の身分の者はなおさらのことである。
一、京都や大坂の食べ物を味わってみると、江戸に勝るものは全くない。もとより「江戸の食い倒れ」という諺の通り、日本橋通りの夜商いはすべて食べ物であり、裏店での商売は莫大なものである。その他にも料理茶屋が軒を並べ、一町ごとに鰻屋、または猪・鹿・鶏・鼈（すっぽん）などを売る者が多い。それを健康のための補いの菜と思って身を損なう者がいる。人々が子孫の長命と繁栄を願わないはずはない。それゆえ、殺生と不浄の肉食を慎むべきことだと、かの翁は歎息した。
一、世の人が衣・食・住の三つを節約するときは、出費も少なく、なんとか暮らしを立てて、非常の時のための備えを肝要とすべきである。花の江戸は日ごとに繁栄し、わずかな空き地もなく、武蔵野の端々まで軒から軒へと続き、軒先から出入りする月を眺められなくなるほどである。まことにありがたい御代ではあるが、ただ恐るべきは火災の多いことは言うまでもない。これは繁華の——

In castle towns of other domains, regulations on clothing are strict, and people are required to wear cotton according to their rank, so those of lower standing are expected to observe this all the more.

As the saying "Edo's eating oneself into ruin" suggests, the night market stalls along Nihonbashi are all selling food, and trade from the back-alley shops is enormous. Beyond that, restaurants and teahouses line the streets, and in every block there are many who sell eel, as well as wild boar, deer, chicken, and soft-shell turtle. Some people consume these thinking they supplement their diet for health, yet end up ruining their bodies. There is no one who does not wish for long life and prosperity for their descendants. Therefore, that old man lamented with a deep sigh that one should refrain from the killing of living creatures and the consumption of impure meats.
One item: When people of the world cut back on the three necessities of clothing, food, and shelter, their expenditures will be modest, they can manage their livelihoods reasonably well, and they should make preparations for emergencies their highest priority. The magnificent city of Edo grows more prosperous day by day, without even a small vacant lot remaining, and from the farthest reaches of the Musashino plain, rooftops stretch so closely together that one can no longer gaze upon the moon as it passes between the eaves. It is truly an age for which we should be grateful—yet the one thing most to be feared is, needless to say, the frequency of fires. This is a consequence of such prosperity—
