Although there are various individuals, since they serve in minor official work places, they take oaths according to minor official oath procedures. However, since there was an internal communication requesting that they be ordered to take oaths in the same manner as guard units, when this matter was consulted with the senior councilors, on the 23rd day of the 7th month, duty councilor Sakai Hamon decided that even though they serve in minor official work places, they should be ordered to take guard unit oath papers. Consequently, new guard unit leader Kishida Zenemon was ordered to take his oath on the 5th day of the 8th month in the map room with magistrates and inspectors in attendance.
1. When there are those among treasury officials and guard units serving in minor official work places who should be ordered to take oaths, their names are written and sent to the monthly duty inspector, and notification is made that they should be ordered to take oaths. The day before oath-taking is ordered, the monthly duty inspector notifies the unit commanders and supervising heads.
However, although it is as stated in the main text, there are also cases where senior councilors communicate directly to unit commanders. Naturally, oaths for minor officials and below remain as before.
Additionally, when those of outer guard rank and above are ordered to take oaths, name lists are previously provided by inner scribes to monthly duty inspectors, and the monthly duty inspectors notify each regarding dates and other matters. Around the Kōka period
[Header note] Yaosato's notes
1. Regarding oath paper ceremonies
Appearing in formal crested clothing
There is no rule that this cannot be done
However, it is generally considered
Better not to wear crested formal clothing based on individual judgment
1. On the 11th day of the 9th month of Tenpō 12 (1841), when Edo guard Sawada Kōdayū was ordered to take a role oath, unit commander Isono Tamiya communicated this via circular. However, since he had been confined due to illness from before, only a notation was made and he did not specifically communicate that he would not report for duty the next day. Misunderstanding that it would be acceptable not to report for duty that day, he submitted a restraint petition, and restraint was ordered as petitioned.
1. Blood seal procedure notes - Recorded by Yaosato for personal reference. These are notes from Kaga Kurōemon.
1. From the oath preface, respectfully receive the divine oath text, then take and place it before oneself. Wet the inkstone with water, take ink and grind it straight, then take the brush and pull the cap toward oneself to examine it. For new brushes, pull the cap toward the opposite side; for old brushes, pull the cap toward oneself to use. (Normally one pulls the cap toward oneself. One does not use it pulled partway.) Then dip in ink, write name, official title, and personal seal in one line, put away the brush, place the short sword flat, draw the small knife with the left hand, take it with the right hand, place it to the right with blade tip facing backward, also take out tissue paper and place it together with the small knife to the right side. For men, use the left ring finger (for women, the right ring finger), push completely toward the nail tip, so the finger does not separate, press the adjacent fingers together, press the ring fingertip with the thumb pad, take the small knife between the thumb and index finger pads, rest it on the middle finger pad, extend the blade tip slightly, pierce between the ring finger nail edge and the horizontal line, wait a moment and blood will emerge. The first blood is impure so take it with the knife tip and absorb it with paper; take the second blood with the knife tip, judge the spacing of the seal impression and press. Applying too much blood is impure; too little also appears cowardly. Then present it, and everyone returns to their original positions as before.
4th month, 12th month, 21st day, in Edo
1. On the 4th day of the 1st month of Enkyō 5 (1748), Sakai Geki communicated that henceforth when oath papers for roles in both the domain and Edo are ordered, one should handle appearing in hemp formal wear.
1. When those of outer guard rank and above are ordered to take oath papers, the previous day senior councilor scribes circulate name lists to these individuals stating that role oath papers will be ordered tomorrow on [date], so they should appear at the council hall at 5 o'clock wearing hemp formal wear, as communicated by monthly duty colleagues. At the beginning of Kōka it was like this.
