Additionally, at that time, we shall not say a single word. While this person remains in your group, I stand as guarantor. Should I die or face unavoidable circumstances, I shall promptly notify you and arrange for a replacement guarantor. This serves as future proof, therefore it is as written. [Year] [Month] Servant: [Name] [Seal] Guarantor: [Village Name] [Name] [Seal] Group Official [Name] Lord 1. In the 8th month of Kyōwa 2 (1802), during the martial arts viewing, it was decided that regarding group administrators standing guard at the viewing area, they should consult with the duty inspector after reporting for duty before withdrawing. 1. On the 8th day of the 11th month of Bunka 3 (1806), regarding members of the gun-bearing group going to theaters and all places of entertainment requiring admission fees, there were misunderstandings, so in accordance with the separate document, after consultation with colleagues, orders were given to the group squad leaders and communicated to each member. Separate document: Members of the gun-bearing group have been heard to go to theaters and all places of entertainment requiring admission fees, bringing along family, children, and acquaintances. This is unsuitable behavior for gun-bearing personnel. Henceforth, those who go to places of entertainment must never bring others along. Especially during theatrical performances, they must not wear disguises and should make it clear they are gun-bearers. Of course, secret surveillance has been deployed, so if improper behavior is reported, punishment will follow. However, regarding the understanding of official duties by those on active duty, thorough investigation should be made among veteran members to ensure proper service. Even when going on surveillance missions, they should consult with each other to avoid criticism from others and prevent misunderstandings. 1. Regarding the inquiry about the origins of establishing a separate squad leader for the gun-bearing group, an explanatory document was submitted. From the monthly duty records: 1. The establishment of one separate squad leader for the gun-bearing group dates back to ancient times from Lord Chūnagon's reign. At that time, the squad leader received a stipend of 15 koku, and the remaining 20 men received 13 koku each. Later, when [the domain] became 500,000 koku, the squad leader received 13 koku and the remaining 20 men received 11 koku each. However, when it became 250,000 koku, it became 9 koku. 1. During Lord Daian-in's era, during the pioneering of Matsuoka, following the same precedent, the gun-bearing squad leader at Matsuoka also received 10 koku and 6 to, while the others received 8 koku each. However, from the time of unification under Fukui, all 21 men equally received 9 koku. 1. Regarding duties during military service, perhaps because current governance arranges role assignments as usual, armor is provided for 21 men, but bows and firearms are not given to the squad leader. However, I do not know how military duties are performed, but I have heard this through oral tradition. Furthermore, gun-bearing duties have traditionally been treated with importance, and as per regulations, they are employed with special distinction above other groups, which I have also heard through tradition. Beyond this, there is nothing definitive to state. This is what has been passed down from veteran members. End. 6th month of Tenmei 7 (1787) 1. The gun-bearing group does not provide guards for the women's quarters. Same as above. 1. On the 15th day of the 3rd month of Kyōwa 3 (1803), when the women's quarters staff were ordered to view the main castle and shrine, the duty inspector ordered that two guards be dispatched. However, when we reported that we could find no precedent for dispatching guards to the women's quarters, it was settled that if there was no record in the monthly duty logs, there was no need to dispatch them. ≪Marginal note: Yaosato considers that while there may have been cases of the gun-bearing group providing guards for the women's quarters, originally it appears to be the rule not to provide such service as stated in the document≫
